How To Changetiming Belt?

Hi all,

I have a 2003 Avensis 2.0 D4D(newer model)which is in need of a timing belt change. However I cant afford/am not prepared to pay 650E to get a dealer to do it. I'm(reasonably)handy with a spanner so want to do it myself. Cant find a manual(like haynes) for this model, so was wondering does anyone have a procedure for doing this, and also a list of parts/speacial tools that i might need to complete this?

Cheers

David

It is not an easy job to undertake, and takes a long time, but pretty much all engines are generic in procedure.

Follow something like this: http://www.howtodothings.com/automotive/a3502-how-to-replace-a-timing-belt.html

If you find yourself getting stuck, then refer to a different model's haynes manual with the same engine.

Good Luck

That link is not much help - you need to buy manual from eBay friend for specific car

Pretty straight forward to change, once you have removed sound proofing panels from under car engine, if your lucky the little M8 bolts will not all break off. You need a locking pin for hydraulic tensioner, Tipex, Loctite, crankshaft puller for front pulley and a torque wrench to retorque pulley when re-fitting. Their is no official tool locking kit for job on the market, as their is nothing to lock. Go to "Autodata" site and download picture of timing belt setup for a few pound also has all torque settings for re-fitment. If hydraulic tensioner is leaking, bin it. You don't give milage for car, but if it is high, you might consider changing the water pump at the same time. I have seen new belts knocking out the water pump bearings with in a few weeks. It's not technically hard to do, more time consuming i would say.Good Luck.

  • 2 weeks later...

hi,

i believe your car doesn't have a cam belt, it has a timing chain which should not need changing and should last the life of the car.

mark.

2003 model will be belt driven diesel - no doubt about it.

Pretty easy to change, just take your time and i think been mentioned above you may want to change the water pump at the same time as i have changed a few belts on these and most of the pumps have been leaking.

Mart.
