New Yaris - 1.0 Or 1.33?

We're looking to change our second car (a 2007 Mazda 2) and the Yaris is under consideration. The car will mainly be used for commuting in Birmingham, with the occasional longer trip (although for most trips we would use my Auris 1.33).

In the real world, what would the difference be between the 1.0 litre Yaris and the 1.33? We're looking to purchase new.

You get a six speed gearbox and "stop/start" system on the 1.33 that you don't on the 1.0.

If you're doing a lot of city commuting, the stop/start will be beneficial and if you're doing a motorway run, the higher gearing of the six speed gearbox of the 1.33 will be useful too.

Given those differences, I suspect the "real world" difference in economy of the two engines is fairly minor and the extra power and refinement of the 1.33 will be much appreciated....

Bye the way I like the Mazda 2 and almost bought one! Dont you fancy another? what engine does yours have?

The current Mazda 2 came out at the end of September 2007 - we bought one of the previous models new and it was registered 1st September 2007. The car is a 1.4 Capella and is almost as practical as the first generation Jazz - it was based on the Fiesta/Fusion and built by Ford in Spain on the Fiesta production line. Mechanically it is all Ford.

As a car it has been generally fine, but the ownership experience has been spoilt by niggling problems. We had the coil pack go at 8 months, and then had to wait over 10 weeks for a replacement HT Lead (until I insisted Mazda UK fit the Ford part). At the 2 year service (at 10,800 miles) the car needed two new front tyres (195/45 16's - not cheap) - tracking was way out on both front wheels and had been like that since leaving the factory. The window winding mechanism on the front passenger door has now developed a fault, and the car is booked in Wednesday to have this sorted under warranty (just be interesting to see what our experience this time will be).

Of the 15 new Japanese brand cars we've had, this has been the worst.

We are also looking at the current Mazda 2 1.3 - which is built by Mazda in Japan and has Mazda running gear - but I feel that the Mazda aftercare service (both from the dealers and Mazda UK) leaves something to be desired. This will influence whether we stay with Mazda or move to Toyota (my current car is an Auris and previous one a Corolla).

The new five year warranty that Toyota have is also a plus point.

Fair point made by PaulJack about making sure you factor into your decision, the deals on offer.

We got our 1.3SR instead of a 1.4D SR because we could get almost £1800 off a 1.3 but only £300 off a 1.4D - and as the 1.4D was already £1000 higher list price, that made £2500 difference in the purchase price...

I think the answer is "you'll be fine with either" - but if you have the spare cash for the 1.33 and can afford for it to be a handful of mpg worse (maybe) then the 1.33 is a more relaxed cruiser and has that bit more poke.

Certainly myself, my wife and daughter all thought our 1.0 was fine when we had that, but prefer the 1.3 now we have two of those instead....

1.0 comes with 3 cylinders, 1.33 with 4. I have learned never to trust engines running on 3,5 or 7 cylinders. All the momentum and symmetry seems to be disturbed. Maybe it's just a weird saying or superstition, but I stick to this rule. 4,6,8 or 10 :)

For exclusive city driving, the 1.0 is adequate, but for country, A-road and motorway driving, the 1.33 is much more pleasant.

The 1.0 litre is no slouch, and as far as 3 cylinders goes, we has a Suzuki swift 1.0 for 7 yrs, which was a 3 cyclinder and it was excellent. No problems at all with it, and for a 1.0 is was quick enough.

We now have a 1.3 yaris which is better, and will probably stick with that size engine now. The fuel economy is better than the Suzuki, but only just

No consideration of the diesel?

It's as fast as the 1.33 and as economical as the 1.0!

Only downside is you get shafted on the cost a bit buying it new :(

(Personally I don't like the current Yarisseses; The range of trims is appalling compared to a few years back. Been hoping they'll expand the range but doesn't look likely :( )

I would take both the 1.0 and the 1.33 for a good long test drive before buying. I have a 2009 T2 1.0 but have had the 1.33 6 speed as a courtesy car a couple of times. There is not a massive difference between the 2 models. The 1.33 has a bit more grunt but not a huge amount. Also the 6 speed gearbox felt notchy compared to the 5 speed in my car, and I never really felt the need for the 6th gear even on the motorway.
