Hi everyone,

As I mentioned in my last thread.. I have got myself a 2006 Aygo 'Black', with just 43,000 miles on the clock.

It has MMT, which has a few idiosyncrasies, but I'm getting used to it now, and it's well ok.

Now then..... I have no rev-counter(or handbook) to tell me what are the maximum speeds that I can do in each gear(this is when I'm using the manual aspect of the MMT), without reaching the 'red-line' and/or over-revving the engine.

Obviously, having driven since 1962, I can 'feel' when the stage is reached when it's time to change up, but... the Aygo is so smooth and never really sounds as though it is over-revving(is this the VVT-i effect?), which makes it difficult to know how far to go in each gear, particularly when overtaking.

I'm mainly asking this question, because I have, on quite a few occasions, taken it to around 60mph in 3rd gear when needing a good quick pull for overtaking.

It doesn't 'feel' or sound as though it's over-revving, but is it though???

I'd be interested in knowing the suggested safe maximum speed in each gear, without causing engine damage??

The Aygo does quite high speeds in each gear when necessary without sounding stressed, but I don't want to shorten the life of the motor.

Any info you can offer will be much appreciated.

Cheers....

Raggy.

I remember I used to drive an old Renault 5. It only had 4 gears, and I took her up to 90 mph.

The Aygo engine is a very solid engine indeed, and it doesnt sound like its getting stressed. I accidently took my car in 4th gear up to 60 - 70mph, and I ve had no problems

It's great for running up to 60 mph in second if you need to prove a point...

And you can tak it up to 140kmh (about 85mph) in 3rd, which is roughly 6000rpm

As said above:

1st: 30

2nd: 60

3rd: 85

4th: 98@ around 5500rpm

One of my friends says that when she hears the car above 5000rpm she thinks it's in pain. I just tell her that it's one of the best sounds I've ever heard. Reminds me of VTEC. :)

Must admit the engine does sound nice doing about 40-50 in second.

In city, when i'm misplaced, i reach 5O km/h (31 mph) in first.

When i have to accelerate on a hill, i can get 90 km/h (56 mph) in second.

When i'm on a motorway, after toll, i usually get 130 km/h in third (81 mph) to reach the speed limit (in France)

If you want to test tour topspeed, you can reach above 100 mph in fourth.

Despite that, i'm still getting around 60 mpg with my car.
