How To Change Disc Pads

Hi,

What's involved in changing the front & rear disc pads on a TX3 2.0 D4D 56 plate (Jan 07)? I have changed the front pads on a Mondeo before, but never on a car with rear discs, does the handbrake/disc combination complicate matters? Do I need any special tools? Is 10,000 miles wear reasonable for a set of pads? Any particular pads recommended?

hi,

changing front pads on an avensis is a doddle, tools needed: 13mm short reach socket, hammer, pair of pliers, front brakes remove the pad carriers = 2x 13mm bolts on rear of caliper, remove the pad holder clips with the pliers = 4x bent springy stainless steel pieces of metal that hold the pads in position, clean the whole brake assembly with brake and clutch cleaner spray and wipe clean, dont buy cheap patent pads as these dont come with brake shims which are needed to stop brake squel, use the shaft of the hammer to push back the piston = the round metal piece, this can be stiff to push back due to the brake fluid in the system, refit whole assembley both sides of car, always remember to bleed your brakes after fitting new pads.

afrer 10k miles you should not need to replace your pads,if they have friction material thickness greater than 2mm you don`t need to changing them

new brake pads have thickness 11mm and minimum allowed is 2mm so you should be fine for app 40 000 miles.
