Hi all, i a have a 1996 previa GX, when i turn the key to start the engine, sometimes it will start first time, then others there is just a single "click" turn off & on then "click" again. I have to go through the gears from N to D & back to N to get it to start. I thought it may be starter motor but have been told it may be the gear anchorage or selector?

Has anyone else had this problem & what was your cure?

Thanks Darren

It IS the starter motor.

They always stop at one of two places and these sections of the motor wear out. If you had a manual you can prove this by putting it in gear after a failed start and allowing the car to roll a few inches; this turns the starter motor to a good part of the rotor and it will then start.

I am not sure if this will work with an auto, but from what you are saying about going through the Drive selector I would say it is the same.

Mine failed at about 170,000 miles on a 92GL

i totaly agree try to strat it in N if it fails the frist time let it roll a bit and give it another go or you can give it a go by putin it in N and rolling it while starting it at the same time dont worry it will not jump LOL

You HAVE to roll it in gear, N will not do as the engine is not connected to the wheels and so will not turn over the drive belts connecting it to the starter motor.

Unless the starter motor is turned to a fresh, undamaged segment of the rotor, it will not start.

Even a few inches is enough
