New Rav4 4.1 (1995) Owner,.. Couple Of Questions.

Hi,

I just bought a 3 door Rav4 GX, its a Ver. 4.1 (UK N reg, so 95-96)

I bought it for work, cause I need to drive over building sites and I could get some gear in the back. I was suprised on how it drove and really like it so going to use all the time :)

My questions: My main key has a fob for immobilzer (i think its a scorpion make)the fob is a small black rectangular unit with "MPT 1340 WT.LICENCE EXEMPT" printed on the back, a black button and red button on front, a 3 pin port on left side, a switch n right side..also attached are 2 cylndrical keys

I understand the black button activates/deactivates..

I guess the 3 pin port is for re- programming if Battery in fob is dead??

red button I dont know what is for, switch turns on/off internal motion sensors?

The cylindrical keys I guess is a dead lock immobilzer of some sort? but where on car?

My other question is as much as I like the Rav4, I want to change the front headlights, dont have to be converted to HID, just the styling..

I have noticed on eBay and car styling shops there are headlight kits like chrome or black Angel eye head lights, and Halo lights..

Is there any recommend supplier of (prefer from UK), or any particular custom headlight that will fit My Rav4 (4.1 95-96) or any DIY mods I can do to change the looks (make look more "modern"), but also consider full HID conversion..

Apologies if this is a frequent post for noob owner, but could find too much detail..

Welcome to the club... you've got a great workhorse now!!

On the alarm - alarms were fitted to the cars when they arrived in the UK. The company who supplied your type went bust in 1995, so when the alarm goes faulty its best to replace it or de-activate it.

From memory the switch de-activates the internal movement sensors.

The 3 pin port is defunct as is the alarm.

The cylindrical keys gives you access to the box under the bonnet. Whats it for? Going back a few years now....was it to disable the siren?

I've swapped one of my RAVs over to the angel eyes.... looks different certainly but I found it a footer to switch them. Follow the guide on the rav4world site as the wiring is based on switching the earths rather than the live wire. You need to keep the motors from the original headlights (the ones the alter the beam height) and fit these into the angel eyes unit....and fitting these is fiddly. Got my units from eBay but I think they can be bought elsewhere....altho you might find the stuff is USA based.

Thanks for the info...

I still a little unsure what the red button does on the key fob, I have been told its to be be used if you disconnect the Battery, cannot be sure though.

As with the lights, I assume they have to be for pre-1998 models to fit, was looking at chrome set from Depo..

I still have the manual info sheet for the alarm somewhere if I find it. The rd button was related to the alarm operation I'm sure.

  • 4 weeks later...

Hey! I just bought a 1995 RAV4 at the weekend too!

Very pleased with it so far.

I have an owners manual with mine and according to it the red button is the panic alarm.

I haven't tried it yet, but I guess you hit the red button and the alarm starts singing....

Hi,

I bought a 1995 Rav4 this week aswell and have the same alarm system but no manual. So how do you totally disable the alarm and where is the box under the bonnet located ?

I must admit that the sunroofs look to be a total waste of time as all they do is tilt or remove totally.

Hmmm, good question.

Bloke I bought mine off said the small cylindrical notched key was used to disable the alarm.

I think there's a black box under the bonnet by the Battery where this key fits.

I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find it. The manual doesn't seem to say anything about this disabling feature though.

I quite like the sunroofs. On Sunday I had them both out and the windows down and it was a bit like being a convertible :-)

Today I had them tilted open whilst the car was parked out in the sun and as a result the car wasn't an oven when I got back.

The red button is a panic alarm in case you get attacked by a rogue RAV4 5 door dieselly driver.

The removeable sun roofs are great and transform the car.....in 16 years of ownership, we've had the sunroofs off about 20 times. Gives the feeling of a convertible without having the ridiculously low windscreen!

The little round key is to disable the alarm whilst the mechanics work on the car....and the larm box should be mounted on the bulkhead just behind/to the side of the Battery - as has been said. The siren horn thing is also mounted on the bulkhead (or mine is). The alarms were an extra fitted when the cars arrived in the UK so each car is different.

On the lights, the angeleyes I fitted were not plug and play - a bit of re-wiring was necessary...but theres a pinned article on rav4world which gives the necessary info. Maybe they've rewired the new lights?

did that not enable/disable the internal movement sensors so that it didn't go off if you'd left little brats (pets ahem) in the car?

The slide switch disables the ultrasonic movement detection inside the car so you can leave people or pets in it or the windows open a bit on a hot day but still have the alarm armed for all the other bits.
