Lowering Springs...

I was thinking about getting some lowering springs for my 2. I only want them to make the car look that little bit lower, but I don't want them to naff up the good handling I already have from the standard suspension.

Is it ok to get some lowring springs fitted and do they alter the driveability that much?

Thanks

I think it all depends on the springs/shocks combination you have. Lowered springs will make the ride firmer, and will also affect the mount of give in the suspension. Whilst this is fine on nice flat tracks, it can put you in trouble on bumpy country lanes with uneaven road surfaces. If the suspension is too stiff, you could potentialy enter a situation where one or more wheels are off the ground, if that is the case going around a corner, you might end up in trouble!!

I live in an area that is very bumpy!! I get the wheels lifting off the ground with standard suspension :o

I just want it to look a bit lower, but have pretty much the same ride. I won't touch it if it fudges all the geometry and knackers the dampers though...

Don't make the mistake i made, the ride was improved unbelievably :P , there is no roll whatsoever :D , corners on rails ;) BUT Shocks have to be uprated, I lowered on Eibach by 30-35mm and the results were fantastic, til I blew out all four shocks  :( . They should be uprated by 15-20%. Hope this helps :)

Lol, I thought as much. So it won't be a cheap and easy thing to do then :(

How much did you pay for springs and shocks?

I KNOW I can't afford coilovers Bibbs

(my full coilovers were cheaper than a set of Eibach springs  )

Have a look @ Fensports website for an idea ..

Maybe these springs are what you have been looking for. I have been running a group buy on them on another Forum and the buy closes today. Let me know if you would like to place an order b4 say 9pm tonight and I will add you to the list.

Espelir Spring Group Buy

Right guys and girls, this is the lowering springs you have all being waiting for the Espelir Active GT's. Acording to the manufacturer these springs will satisfy the performance driver that wants to extract the best performance out of his/her vehicle.

On a MR2 the car will be lowered approximatly 35mm Front and 25mm Rear. This will lower the car just enough to be aestheticaly pleasing without effecting the geometry in such a way as to prevoke problems such as "tramlining" and uneven "tyre wear".

About Espelir.

After participating in the top levels of racing, including Japan GT Championship which is the top production car based racing series, 24 hours of Le Mans, Sebring, etc.... we have tested and studied to find the right combination of power for the real world!

SUSPENSION

In accepting the challenge to develop superior suspension springs that meet governmental minimum ride height requirements while at the same time enhancing the need for road hugging good looks, ESPELIR proudly introduces its Active GT low form springs.

The Active GT Low Form springs continue the legacy of durability, refined road responsiveness, and superior technology that driving enthusiasts expect from the company that defines "Unrivaled Automotive Suspension Engineering."

Our advanced methods and experience with vehicle lowering enable us to keep a 90mm ground clearance. Our suspension give a comfortable and most importantly a stable ride.

*Keep proper stroke during compression.

*Less fatigue.

*No loose spacing between the spring end and spring perch.

Our products utilize SAE9254 and new material SAE9254MHT (Vanadium mixed material) under strict quality control during all aspects of manufacturing - during heating of material, cooling, and winding to ensure proper stroke volume and spring lightness.

By combining high powered technology of manufacturing and real world testing on the street and track, we can produce the best suspension setting for each specific car make.

For surface coating methods, we use 3 steps of shot peening to ensure super durability of the spring. Of course, epoxy resin power coating is the finish of choice.

won't alter the handling i'd say these above spring will completely shag it ! lowering the front more than the rear of any car will increase oversteer, you'd kill your self in minutes in an original or rev1 car!

Hmmm I tend to agree, I've heard too many stories of people lowering cars with springs only to have huge problems with the handling. As I said before, on a perfectly flat track, it will corner like it's on rails, but I would be very dubious about running the car along a bumpy road, I think you would have problems.....

I have a set that lowers her only by 25mm

which looks the part, only thing is that since I put on a Bomex front I have had to put the STD ones back on as I couldn't get it out of my backyard !! :crybaby:

I believe my whole set up is shagged - its bound to be on a 13yr old car. On a motorbike, you are advised to change the shock every 2 to 3 years and they pretty much lose their usefulness after 1 to 2 years in my experience.

Whats the best idea for sticking to stock settings but getting nee shocks and springs all round. (or do the springs come with most shocks???)

Cheers

if i were you i'd go to fensport and get the kyb setup, as thats the original equipment on your car, not to expensive either. If your willing to pay a bit more they do tubby standard equipment replacements bilstein that would fit on your car and stiffen it up/ lower it a bit. But as toyota designed it to be for road use.

I just lowered mine with B&G springs + near new FACTORY Bilstein shocks. Basicly the springs dropped the front 10mm and the rear stayed the same height. Im REALLY happy....don't have to worry about scraping and it's nice and solid with no body roll, and not really any bumper than my factory Gen III springs.

Cheers

Well "Espelir" are a company that specialise in suspension and thats all they do! They have a fantastic motorsport pedgree and have competed in Japans GT Championship and Le Mans so I would imagine they know a thing or too about suspension.

I have been in several Supras with these springs fitted and the handling was second to none. I would agree that lowering springs are best fitted with uprated shoxs but as an alternative to just fitting say Eibach springs alone these would be in a different league.

Thanks

Kevin

Do what i am going to be doing in about a year. Get airbag suspension. :D It is about $1200 in the U.S. for all of the stuff and the compresser would fit in the trunk (don't need it anyway). Then you need bags and a switch panel set up and you just about set. B) I don't know a whole lot about it but have ridin in a car with bags and rode like a dream when they were inflated and like crap when they weren't. But in a bumpy area you would only defleat them when you are parked cause you will be CLOSE to the ground. I wouldn't ever drive around with them deflated and i live in a rather smooth area.
