93 Celica Speedo Stops At 40-45

Hello All,

Hoping someone can help. I have a 93 Celica St that I have been reviving.

My speedo works normal until about 40 to 45mph. It won't go past that.

The car will go faster but regardless how fast I go the speedo stops.

When I slow down the speedo comes back down as it should but I just can't tell

how fast I am going after 45. The car had sat in a driveway for a few months before

I got it and the wiring has been altered in places.

I've never been to mechanically inclined but I'm trying to learn. I have a manual for

the car but I am still having trouble. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If anyone has

had this problem or knows what causes it or how to fix it please share.

It's got a 1.6L 4AFE if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance for any info.

may need a new speedo cable , not sure of your gearbox , but if the cable simply screws into a gland on the gearbox you can attatch a Battery drill to the cable and make it work the speedo that way you know the clocks end isnt the problem , now if the cable goes into a kind of small black plastic type unit that fixes to the gearbox , thats the sender , this could be faulty , dirty inside ,or sheared some teeth . your car might even have a digital sender which is faulty ??

ps - 1 more thing to check , it might sound silly but trust me it happens , the speedo could be working perfect , it can be the needle on the clocks is sticking on the clocks facia , if you do take the clocks out to check this ,go easy they break easily. try this last like i said if you take off the cable from the gearbox and have someone spin the inner cable while you watch the clocks ,you will soon know if the needle itself is sticking at 45mph .
