Air Conditioning

Have noticed a dusty, not very pleasant smell in car after switching off air con. I took the car to Toyota yesterday. They said they looked at pollen filter, it was fine. The problem could be a small amount of moisture that gathers when air con has been used. Advised to switch on the heater and air con once a week to alleviate this problem. They said it was under the glove box and a bit awkward to get at. The gave it a spray with some deodoriser and gave me a bill for £42. I had a look when I got home and found that the cover under the glove box wasn't clipped in to anything. Could feel a filter but can fix my hand up in the space. How can this filter be effective?

sorry this is an old post but i just have to point out that, OUCH £42. I is way too much just to take the filter out and spray it with some deodoriser.

yes this is a normal thing in toyota, once the ac is off you will smell the moisture drying up smell. turn the heat up high for 10 to 20 seconds and turn the heat back down again this should lift the damp moisture smell you were getting.

by the way to get to the filter is easy, open the bottom glove box and unclip on of the clip on the side closer to the door and pull the glove box upwards and it will come off its groove and you will see the cabin air filter. the instruction is in the manual book by the way.

i used to have a nissan alemera with the same problem. i used to take it to an independent air-con expert, who used to "de-bug it for me.

basically they used to put a special aerosol can in a small machine plug it into the mains ,put it in the front passenger footwell and turn it on(i think as far as i can remember with windows shut and heating turned up full for about 10 mins)it used to clean it a treat for about £30.

a nissan dealer did a similar thing before i went to the specialist and it didnt work, they used to charge me £50 !
