Advice On Buying A T Sport Yaris

Hi guys...Im normally on the Avensis side of this site talking about all my millions of problems i have with...but i'll be getting rid of it soon...thought about replacing it with a corolla 1.6 SR...NOW im thinking may be a Yaris 1.5 T sport would be better...See i aint really fussed about size...its justme,my partner, and 2 boys...

My questions therefore...are they economical?...and are they reliable?...And what do i need to look out for when i find one?(common faults etc???)

I've seen a 2005 1.5 Tsport at a toyota dealer with 50,000 miles on its clock for £5500...is it worth it though? I have noticed they tend to hold their value for some reason as they are always expensive. I like the 2001 models but prefer the face lifted versions from 2004 onwards i think!

Anyways...what do you guys think? Please help...Regards...Sammy

The Yaris is a very good car :) £5500 is about par for a TSport from a dealer.

I have a diesel T-Spirit and it's been pretty bullet proof so far; Only gripes I've had so far have been the crap alloys (They corrode readily if they aren't maintained/cleaned regularly) and the anti-roll bar bushes (Seem to wear out quite quickly). These are pretty minor tho'.

I'm not sure how economical the 1.5 is; It will not be as good as the other Yaris' engines, but they set a really high bar for mpg anyway :P

I bet it's great fun to drive tho'; My one is pretty nippy and it's a diesel so I can't imagine what the 1.5 is like!

All that said, if you're gonna be carting round the whole family I'd lean more toward the 'Rolla; it's much more spacious and comfortable than the Yaris, and if you go for a family run up the motorway it'll be a lot more relaxing than in the Yaris.

Ive gone from an Avensis T-Spirit D4D with absolutely everything on it colour sat nav,cd changer x2 electric seats etc etc to the T-Sport and to be honest im quite happy, I miss the avensis ride on the motorway it was so relaxed could do 700 - 800 miles in it and get out feeling fresh, I reckon 100 miles in a TS on the motorway would be enough! However round town its perfect and as thats where I do 90% of my driving suits me fine! I think you should be looking at a 5 door one for certain I have never had anyone in the back of mine yet, but it certainly doesnt look easy to get into!

According to the computer in the yaris its averaging about 36 - 37 MPG which is about 5 - 6 less than the Avensis did from what I remember, Im sure in the Avensis I could squeeze out about 570 miles on a tank....I reckon the Yaris will Do about 250 ish the way I drive it!

Its quite a change from the avensis so I would be sure its the right thing for you....size wise etc! Maybe an Auris (is that within budget) Also is only me and the wife and she has a big car for long journeys....The TS is not ideal for long journeys with children I dont think! Revs far too high, The avensis was doing about 2700 revs at 75 - 80 ish from what I remmeber the TS is doing 3800 or so.....You will really notice that!

Not much goes wrong but as it's a hot(ish) hatch, avoid any that have been owned by the boy racer brigade.

Sloppy gearboxes & clutches, worn out brakes, dodgy electrics, blue neon washer jets, ect ect are what i would avoid. A good standard car is allways best.

Find a carefully maintained regular mileage car with a FTSH and you won't go far wrong.

Just do checks like on any other car, there is no real problem as such with the Yaris, the only cars with problems are badly maintained ones so do your homework, take time and find the best you can.

Agree with Raeman - anyone buying a sports version will doubtless be someone young and eager to show off which means its going to be well thrashed.

Just been looking at all your pages of Avensis problems, it seems you are experiencing exactly that, paint/bodywork kept well cleaned and polished but mechanically well worn by hard driving.

For a car 2005 onwards then probably your best bet is to buy from a Toyota main dealer where you get a full 12 months Toyota UK warranty, 12 months MOT and 12 months breakdown cover in the actual sale price, not added on extras, plus a 14 or 30 day exchange option if you are not happy with it.

I bought my T-Sport 05 plate from a Toyota dealer for £6k with 35k on the clock.

I downsized from the Corolla T-Sport and while I can tell it's a cheaper car, what I mean is things like the solid noise the Corolla's doors would make it's a tinnier noise in the Yaris, I'm more than happy with the Yaris.

I get 45-50mpg and get around 400 miles to a tank.

Would recommend buying from a Toyota Dealer. The warrenty is worth it alone. I took mine in for the outside air tempature display not working. Minor, yes. But why not if they do it for free under the warrenty.

Have a look on the Toyota Used Car website, there's a couple T-Sports listed on there.

I would have a look for the 5 door model, having the kids as they are far more practical... Personally, I hate 3 door cars! The 5-er is a somewhat rarer beast, though!
