One of my best friends has a Toyota Yaris and is female and she loves the car... but I also have a friend who is male and has one and loves it

What's everyones opinion, girls car, guys car, bit of both!?

Its definately a cute looking supermini but has so much going for it that I'm tempted!

Yeah, the Yaris is a bit like the Fiesta in that regard; Pretty gender neutral :)

But I think lads and lasses like it for different reasons; I love mine because it's really nice to drive but most girls seem to like it because it looks cute :) (And because it's nice to drive :P)

I'm looking at the SR 1.33 version

The Yaris is "All things to All People"

Owned and driven by young and old........Male and Female!

A true "Volkswagen"...............but built by Toyota! ;)

I wouldn't say the Yaris is either a male or female car. Some would say it's a girly car but i've never had any problems driving ours and it's really the wife's anyway.

Now if it was bright pink, i might not drive it as much!

Red Yaris 54 is correct, a true Volkswagen.....Just more reliable! ;)

To be fair tho', if someone gave me a bright pink Veyron I don't think I'd want to drive that either

The older yaris's were much more girly than the new ones (on looks).

I had the old t sport, and now the new D-4D yaris.

Its a mix of both. Depends on what model, year, colour etc. and also what modifications if any you decide to customise it with. Gender neutral I'd say and think a lot of cars are. There are very few that aren't and they are generally geared towards females. The Ford Ka for example.

The other thing about a Yaris is it's one of the few small cars that aren't considered 'learner cars'

(As opposed to e.g. Clios, Puntos, Fiat 500s, Micras, Fiestas (Well okay, not the new ones! They're boy-racer ))

The phase 1&2 are more girly and granny mobiles, the versions after that blend in with other euro boxes and dont have the same character the same can be said for the ford ka.

None are really boys toys, you need more than 100bhp to be one of those.

I don't understand why they aren't considered or used widely as learner cars as they are so driver friendly and are amazing!

They are! The number of independent driving schools using Yarisssesususes has skyrocketed; I always see loads of them when I'm driving around

They tend to use the newer one as opposed to the older one, but this is probably because the instructor wouldn't be able to see the instruments on the older ones

The next most popular [L] car seems to be the Fiat 500 atm (Helps that BSM use them  )

Only downside is you need to be a lot more careful driving at or below 30 during the test :P

This is the one I had, except it was blue. People have told me that every car I've owned were girls cars (ka, clio, yaris, swift, aygo)...I don't really care about stuff like that, I just buy what I like.

You've got old covered for us then? :P ;) :shutit:

The newer Yaris looks plainer to me which makes it gender neutral, I have never really seen either as a boy or girls car and I can see the appeal from both sides.

So "both" is my vote.

I've seen a few Yaris being used as learners cars but not as many as I would hope for or like there to be. Maybe in a couple years time there will be. For the time being it seems that ****ty and annoying cars like the Vauxhall Corsa and Fiat 500 will have the advantage in number.

EXACTLY! I was learning how to drive in a Mrk. 1 and hated it. Fortunately my instructor got a Ford Fiesta which I got on better with. Why are such **** cars the choice of driving instructors? Perhaps because they're cheap and are going to get thrashed anyway maybe?

Micras seem to be popular with driving instructors as well.

I learned in Mk3 & 4 Fiestas. Fairly easy to learn but it was hard going from a diesel with power steering to a petrol (the clutch is much less forgiving) with no PAS, even when it's another Fiesta.

I have seen 2 new shape Yaris learner cars in the last 2 days!

One was a red 09 sr and the other a 10 plate black one. Not a clue what model it was though but it looked boggo with wheel trims.

  • 5 weeks later...

I chose the Yaris as it is spacious, economical, and dynamic despite its small engine. I see the 5door version just perfect. Auris might have been slightly more spacious, but with £2-3k extra on top of price with the same equipment I did not see the reason to buy it. I chose the spec, my wife the color :) We have now a little daughter and she fits perfectly into the rear mounted child's seat. I can put my mother in law's lugguage into the trunk and all are happy!

I bought it also for the very pokemon-like japanese look. Love it, as well as in IQ's front.

And I don't see myself ashamed like driving in a female car (i.e. new VW Beatle or Nissan Micra). Am also happy seeing so many "L" learners rolling in Yaris around the town. :driving:

I learned in a crappy underpowered Corsa too, but I tell you what, you learn damned good clutch control (Since if you don't you'll be stalling the thing every time you set off! )

My brother learned in a diesel Nissan Note and had a hard time adapting to 1st time driver level petrol cars, but ended up with a 2.0 D4D Corolla

Normal Yaris = Girl's Car!

T-Sport = Man's Car!

I own a T-Sport by the way......

Ordinary Yaris, girl's car OR men who like girls', car... T Sport, Boy's car OR men who like boys' car!!!

Real men don't need a bigger engine as they can drive better to start with.

I was always seeing Yari' as learner cars... had one for a year and a half... Phase 1 1L GS model. They have an option of a secondary speedo that fits in the left hand pod in the centre of the dash.

I now have a new (59 plate) Skoda Fabia... Much better for learners and now I am seeing more of these creep into the driving school arena.
