im guessing the bottom end bearings are knackered , sometimes oil lights dont come on , if you know the oil is low , fill it at the 1st chance .

I rather think you've answered your own question there. Do you have a 99-02 VVT-i, if so they have an inherent design fault which Toyota are very well aware of.

A strong possibility will be a scored Crankshaft and Shells, it's fingers crossed time.

Thanks for answering by the way its a 1991 gti the mechanic said its probably the bottom end of the engine can't be repaired would need spend over £3000 to try to repair it but no guarantee so unfortuntely cannot afford it and having just spent quite a bit on new timing belt water pump, steering power pump, in the last 3 weeks. 2 new rear tyres and alternator belt and clutch within last 8 months. Don't want it to go to salvage , any ideas ? Would like to buy another celica GT4 as like these cars very much Thanks

I THINK FOR 1500 quid youd be better off buying another car as easily.

example 1993 gti - 499 quid - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201027362921671/sort/priceasc/usedcars/price-to/2000/model/celica/make/toyota/radius/1501/quicksearch/true/page/1/postcode/sr81ll?logcode=p

keep your old model for spares somewhere. or break it and use eBay - im sure youd get more than 450 quid for all the bits n pieces .

The mechanic is going to take another look to see if he can find the problem from underneath the car as it had a new timing belt and water pump fitted within the past month and he wanted to see if that had anything to do with it so hoping for the best.

The mechanic said it is probably a damaged piston might be causing the noise anyway, he doesnt want to attempt repair or replace engine he advised to buy another car for the money that would be spent on it and doesn't guarantee another engine would work anyway.I wonder if I should get another opinion.

So I am looking for another celica possibly GT4

As I don't know anything about turbos what is there I should I know about driving turbo cars possible to get a 1990 4wd ST185 ??
