My wife has just handed me a May 2010 caravan club magazine in which theres a Rav v tiguan article, TBH its pretty boring especially as the Tiguan comes out top on every aspect :o but a couple of points of interest.. and i Quote.. "of the 31 ravs in our survey only two had reported any faults one EGR valve and one clutch plate at 55000mls, overall the rav averaged a remarkable one fault per 368,100 mls travelled.. :toast: the tiguan had far more faults equating to one fault in 32,044mls" unquote.. however it was still placed above the rav for quality + reliability :(

Secondly... Quote "Toyota owners were divided on the Ravs side hinged rear door which has been replaced by a more conventional hatch on 2009 models"unquote  Have I missed something :unsure: Stew

aha my beloved black car driving enthusiast..........

one of the distractions of caravanning (been there and done it) is that experts who drive caravans twice a year become professional tutors. Now, far be it for me, in my lowly position as a 3 door RAV driver to comment - but then as you expect, I will comment anyway...

I have boringly commented on the technicalities of the 5 door RAV and the Hinge Insurance necessary - and been laughed out of court by greater mortals on this forriiii

Caravans seem to best be served by a heavier car for towing and related vision aspects and also stabilisation additives. I have used my 3 door RAV for towing ridiculous weights like a Jaguar XJS and so on and its great at its capability....BUT

using a glorified cot carrier to tow....made by a recognised company who specialise in air-cooled engines...then sorry - I had a VW campervan and changed the engine twice ---- albeit was the fastest engine change I have ever done - 10 minutes in total as only 4 bolts held it together. The road-holding was matched by how many spare wheels you could carry on the front 'bonnet' and restricted to 40mph round corners. The previous owner had told me the thing had been across the Sahara twice, but i guess it was on the back of a Toyota.

Pity I missed that as I'm still thinking of going for the 170bhp VW. Which one was it? The caravan club have the current mag on their website but the archive stuff I'm not sure if non-members can access.

Hi

I read the article as well.

Would love to see the hatch version.

Methinks the people who compile these articles should get their facts right before going to press.

The Rav was better in some areas than the VW but it still came was given a lower points score.

Biased? No or maybe yes....

We tow with the 2010 150 D4D and it tows our van great.

Thanks.

Peter

My old 1998 RAV4 STAX used to tow a 2007 Bailey Pageant Burgundy.

Then my wee brother got the use of the RAV, and then traded it in on a scrappage deal for a :censor: Vauxhall Vectra. I would have bought it back off him if I had known (although I actually gave it to him - so it wasn't really his to scrap :ffs: ). When he traded it in, it had did 102k miles. Apart from brakes and tyres consumables, all that it ever needed was a front coil. Don't make them like they used to...

EDIT: And in 2000, I got tow bar and twin electrics, all fitted, for £120.

TBH i wouldn,t go hunting this article down, IMO it wasn't very in depth + seems to be the opinion of a collection of owners, you cannot even tell though i suspect that all of them didn't have the same model ravs, as there won't be many 2010 models that have covered 55000 mls + had a new clutch basicaly there were 7 categories as follows..solo performance rav 8/10 vw 9/10 towing performance rav7 vw8..solo handling /ride rav8 vw9 towing handling +ride evens both8/10 comfort + convenience rav7 vw8..quality + reliability rav9 vw 10..verdict rav 8/10 vw 9/10 hope this helps sure you could find a more in depth comparison elsewhere  Stew

Yes read the article I agree not worth the time taken to read.

We have been away covering in access of 2000 miles touring Italy during the last 7 weeks with the caravan following behind and the kitchen sink in the "boot" (wives eh)

Over the Alps and under them, torrential rain in Switzerland souring temperatures in Italy no problem the RAV is a great tow car.
