Any Info On Mpg For My Auris Tr 1.6 (57 Reg)

Hi all..

Just purchased an Auris TR 1.6 , 57 Registration.

It says in the manual that the tank holds 55 litres which is about 12 UK gallons.

I have had this from a dealer and they already put some petrol in it so I filled up the tank to the brim, so there should be 12 gallons in it..

However the miles remaining information on the dash says 314 which means that its only showing as doing just over 26 mpg..

Does this sound right? I mean has anyone else on here got the same car and ever filled the tank up fully to see what mpg is remaining?

Im just a little worried as I have just sold my Toyota Corolla (53 Reg) and that used to do around the 260 mile mark on a full tank which was around the 8 gallon mark according to the manual, that

makes it about 32 or just over to the gallon and that was driving round town.

Can anyone help me out with this problem as its still under a 12 month Toyota warranty.

All the best guys and thanks for anyone who can point me in the right direction..

I wouldn't worry too much about what the gauge or miles remaining show as they are notoriously inaccurate. I'm sure that when you really are low on fuel it will be correct though.

My 1.33 Auris can go about 160 miles on a full tank before the gauge moves off full. I get a true 51 ish mpg yet my miles remaining never shows anything like the expected range on a brim full tank... can't just remember the exact figure but it's in the 400's. The trip computers mpg figure though is amazingly accurate over each fill when checked manually... to within 0.5mpg.

So if this Auris is a 12 UK Gallon tank what should I get out of a full tank, driving sensibly around town?

I would have thought around the 360-380 mile mark?

Its not very good thou is it when its telling you one thing and your getting another..

At least on my old Corolla it was a bit more accurate.

What do any of the auris owners 1.6 show on their gauges for a full tank as miles left?

Funnily enough my Auris (1.6 VVTi SR) shows 314 miles range when the tank is brimmed too!

I guess it's just poorly calibrated or incapable of reading more thank 314. It's reading about 160 remaining... which still isn't accurate as I just drove 10 miles and it started off at 161 miles range...

Lol.... Pretty poor in my opinion when its not showing the correct reading.... As I said in an earlier post my old Corolla wasnt too far out on that....

I wonder if there are any possible fixes for this problem?? Well not really a big problem its just a bit frustrating..

I cant remember on the Auris but doesnt it have a reset button or does it reset automatically?

One thing about them is the gauge will always give you a good idea, even when the light is flashing on one bar there is probably a good 5 litres or so left in it, so use the gauge rather than worrying about the range

Further to my repy above I've just confirmed that I can indeed cover 160miles (not all at once :) so plenty of chances for it to get an accurate reading from cold) and only now has the first or top segment "gone out". However the trip computer mpg is amazingly accurate... I've compared true readings against it several times.

Given the powerful software available and the processing power of the microprocessors used for all this it's surprising gauges are so inacurate. The excuse is always that the modern tanks are so contorted and shallow that a true reading from a float is hard to average out and display. The 1995 Audi A4 I used to have did have a supremely accurate gauge. It held 60 litres, you drove even as little as 15 miles on a full tank and the needle moved progresively down. Fill up when it read 3/4 full and you got 15 litres in. Shame it was just a totally unreliable car in other ways.

Edit... to reset the Auris just use the display button and hold it for a few seconds while displaying the mpg reading.

@ C_ED_99 :- What mileage do you get out of a full tank driving round town????

My T3 doesnt show range of 314, on a full tank it shows only a measly 260. Most of my driving is done local. Resetting the mpg counter has no effect.

I've disconnected then reconnected the car Battery, had a look at the mpg counter, and now on a full tank it shows... wait for it.....314!

Gonna have to wait and see if it will actually do this now!

Perhaps the range figure is adaptive over time. When you fill up from new the car has no idea how it will be driven, so maybe this 314 is "best pre programmed starting figure guestimate" of average around town driving. If tank after tank you get say 45mpg maybe this range figure will adapt and increase... or perhaps it does now when you start driving and eeking out more mpg.

Can't say I have really taken much note on mine... although I know it's nearer about 470 miles range from full.

Sorry just bought the car 2nd hand, so I don't know yet. I forgot to reset the previous owners trip when I filled up the first time and I'm only on the second tank. Traffic is pretty light at the minute with the holidays, and my mpg is ok...

I will report back at the end of the tank, although my driving isn't mainly town.

I was going to suggest removing the Battery, thinking if you have changed driving style (or in my case owners) the computer may be confused... guess it won't help.
