Hi my w reg celica 140 is burning an unusual amount of oil and also making a high pitched noise from the engine (sounds a bit like a belt) even when idle - the noise never goes away! if i rev the engine harshly, black smoke comes out the exhaust. Also when taking odd the revs are low so its quite spluttery, i have to over rev to get moving! im being told its summit to do with the timing chain but the engine has only done 40k!!

If i leave it a few months will it end up writing off the engine (this is already my second engine due to my other one running out of oil - ooops ). i dont have much luck with cars :-(

is my poor cilla celica terminally ill? can she be repaired?

any thoughts would be marvellous xxx

oil burning is normally blue/whiteish smoke , yours sounds like an overfuelling issue . Best bet is get it to a garage .A diagnosis is free

squeeky belt will probably just need tightning or replaced , common fault on the gen 7 . wd40 spray on it helps or a bar of soap .

could also be the auxiliary belt tensioner pulley going, a belt will usually go away when the revs stabilize.

excessive oil consumption can be normal on the 1.8, doesn't cause much of an issue if kept topped up. only real cure is an engine rebuild I'm afraid.

black smoke sounds like over fuelling. this could be down to the lambda sensor going or the mass air flow sensor, would need to be hooked up to a diagnostics computer to see if there are any codes stored.

I had it hooked up to a diagnostics and no faults showed up!! A mechanic has told me its likely to be the timing chain and he has to take the engine apart to fix it :-( The squeek is coming from the front left of the engine - i can see a belt of some kind but i dunno if thats the timing chain, it is coming from that area tho ???

If it is worst case scenrio and needs timing chain, is this urgent or can it wait a while??

Thanks for ya help x

timing chain will rattle not squeak. sounds like hes pulling a fast one!

replacing a timing chain isnt easy but the whole engine dosnt need to come apart.

may be worth taking its somewhere else for a second opinion

i will do just that!! so the sqeek is a whole other problem? there is a belt in the front left of engine (looks like a belt rather then a chain), what is that and cud it be the culprit of the high pitched screeching? Im going to get some wd40 today and go spray crazy on it

thanks xx

it will need a new belt or tensioning correctly - wd40 is a rapid correction and not the solution . is the air filter clean ? dirty air filter can cause overfuelling .

a good service with 4 new spark plugs would help too i think .
