Extended Warranty

Hi,been watching this forum for a year now and you guys have taught me a lot and good banter. I have a Rav T 180 2007 with 20 k on the clock, lovely machine to drive and bought a spare wheel on eBay, so the run flat should not be a problem to me. The car will be three years old on 27th July (three days' time) and my question is, do I take the extended warranty out :help2: for a further two years at a cost of £685, :jawdrop: is it worth it??. Just had the car fitted with new front Discs, MoT, and serviced. Your views would be most appreciated. :icon14:

Hi There.

Welcome to the Club. I think if it was my choice I would say Yes. It's a bit like an insurance policy, if you don't need to claim it seems a waste.... But if you do have a claim it can save you a lot of money.

Hi and welcome to the club Fifer

You have a great car that has just been rated as the most reliable 4X4 in a survey apparently so there shouldn't be much to worry about. That being said, if anything does need fixing you could easily be facing bills way more than the warranty costs. A member has recently been quoted something in the region of £3.5K for replacement of the radio/sat nav unit

I guess 'You pays your money, you take your choice'. If I decide to keep my XTR after 3 years I will deffinitely be going for the warranty.

Just been through the same decision, my car has done 15000 in 3 yrs; so if i extend for 2 yrs my car will have only done 25000, my reasoning is if Mr T is willing to warrantee for 30,000 as std (Now extended on 2010 models) then I am prepared to take the risk, But if I am honest, if this had been 18mths ago when £685 wasn't a problem i may have done it  remember you can take this warrantee out at anytime..I may chance it for 12mths, then if my circumstances improve take it out then, you can also spread the cost over monthly payments but again last thing i need at the mo.. Stew

Re... "remember you can take this warranty out at anytime.."

When you have a period without a warranty and then decide to take one out, is there some sort of inspection you have to pay for.

I mean a fault could develop (slipping clutch for example) and you could take out a warranty and claim after a week or so.

What checks would Toyota insist on.

Welcome t'forum, Fifer......one would presume that you have just had your brake discs done under warranty, so ask yourself how much would that have cost if you'd paid for it? The warranty seems like a good idea to me, since we're all not as deft mechanically as some Derbyshire residents who can do these complex cars wiff their eyes shut.

As a matter of interest, why new discs at 20k? Did you loan your car to Bothwell Buyer for a weekend's racing?

Big Kev.

I took out the extended warranty and it just about paid for itself I would say with new Discs fitted all round under the warranty.  I have read on the forum that Toyota is not as willing as they used to be re items covered under the warranty (seem to be enforcing the "wear & tear" thing a lot more then in the past) so worth checking the details.

Also worth factoring the cost of the Toyota Assistance part of the warranty as that rescue and recovery service is very substantial and if you wanted the same cover without the Warranty could cost you  £200+ easily over the two years (so makes the warranty cost actually better value then it may first seem)

I have the warranty brochure in front of me, the quoted £685 only applies if you take it out B4 the car is 3yrs old between 3-6yrs it costs £780 for 2 yrs cover, you mention a slipping clutch, is that covered ??? it says clutch is covered, then says brake + clutch adjustments and replacements due to wear..ARE NOT COVERED  I have been told that Mr T will not entertain a claim for brake discs + pads over 18000mls even if car is still under 3yrs old, Dave M had some problems with this I don't know if he got them resolved but he now has a Masda.. Kev I was told my discs needed skimming at first service 4700mls, I think the thing to watch out for on all extd warrantees is the wear +tear clause and the (mechanical failure clause) a rattling DMF hasn't actually failed.. Stew

:thumbsup:Hi guys, thanks very much for the quick response. Had a phone call from my local Toyota dealer yesterday , as they had a New Rav demonstrator (five-year guarantee) and asked if I would like a test-drive. Had a test-drive :driving: and found it to be very nippy with great fuel economy (48 mpg) . Had a good talk with the salesman and a waiting a test drive on a new SR automatic with Sat Nav and reversing camera ect. (39.2 mpg ) but apparently there isn't one in Scotland. So hanging fire with the warranty until after the test-drive. I had to pay for the brake discs and pads as they said it was not a manufacturing fault (Reading on this form there is quite a few postings regarding having to change these discs and pads at this early mileage) I have had two Carina E's both doing over 100 K on the original discs) so I made Toyota ,put after-market discs and pads on and told them that the Toyota discs were rubbish :boxing: . They wanted £289 for discs and pads and £55 for an MoT, and I told them I would take it to another garage and have it done. Their reply was that they would match any local price. Received a price from my local garage, which was £180 for discs and pads and £35 for MoT if booked online. Told Toyota this and they said they would inquire and if this was correct, that they would match it. Now if I buy a new Rav the cost for brake discs, pads, MoT and service will be refunded. Anyway guys, thanks again for your views.

I would save the money and keep it to one side just in case.

At the end of the year you will probably still have it all.

It is academic now but for anyone else with brake disc trouble on vehicles inside warranty, you should not pay for repairs due to a fault like judder or vibration. You will have to pay for worn parts. If the numbnut dealer says otherwise you should go back to TGB. Remember, worn - pay, fault - don't pay. You have a warranty against faults but some dealers don't seem to quite get it. I believe TGB will support claims for genuine faults as long as the dealer doesn't misguide them.
