Timing Chain

I have a 2002 auto Avensis 1.8 hatchback. It has done 110 000 miles with no ptoblems that weere not my fault and I would like to keep it that way. In the book it reccomends that the timing chain should be changed after 100 000 miles. I have mentioned this to the guy who does my servicing (independant) and he says, "Don't bother about it, they don't go." The local Toyota garage says that they have never had a timing chain go so it is is not worth doing. Is his true? If a chain was going to go would it get noisy first?

Timing chains don't normally break and last the life of the car.

Timing belts wear a lot quicker and therefore the manufacturers prescribe a preventive replacement after every "xyz" miles/Kms.

However, if a timing chain or belt fails, irrepairable damage will occur to the engine.

Timing belts and chains are not very expensive themselves, but it is a lot of work to replace them.

On some models, the engine even needs to be taken out to get the job done.

Labour cost is what the job makes so expensive.

Unless the timing chain has got noisy in operation, I would forget it. It SHOULD last for the life of the engine if the oil is changed regularly.

what has the oil got to do with the timing chain???

the timing chain runs externally to the engine nowhere near the engine oil which is in the engine

a timing chain is inside the engine behind a sealed cover.

a timing belt does not require lubrication,and if oil got onto it the belt would not last very long.

so the belt is fitted outside of the engine.

its seems you know very little about the subject.
