Playing With My New Toy

The nice royal mail delivery driver dropped of my new toy on Monday.

a nice new AC/DC TIG welder. been after one for a while.

so after unpacking it and getting some sundries it was off out to the workshop.

now I'm very good at MIG welding, passable at MMA (or stick)and OK at oxy acetylene welding but TIG is a little different.

for those who don't know, TIG uses a tungsten electrode to form an ARC which forms the weld pool (but like oxy-acetylene)

you then use a filler rod and fuse the to work pieces together.

the advantages for TIG are that it is very controllable, leaves no spatter and looks very neat with good penetration. its very good for thin sheet metal due to the low currents that can be achieved.

after some practice I have just about got the hang of it and got to this stage:-

mild steel

stainless steel

aluminium, more practice needed but getting there.

looking forward to producing some good work from this.
