hi all

reported in eastern daily press.

which survey reports none of the additives on test made any noticeable improvements to engine power,

torque,exhaust emissions or fuel economy.

as i dont subscribe to which i cant say which fuel additives they tested maybe someother member may know.

Here goes:

STP Power Booster - no significant change in power, torque and fuel economy.

Wynn's Supremium - actually decreased octane rating, power up by 1.6%, torque by 1.4%, fuel economy no significant change. Performance differentce not likely to be noticed.

Redex 0 to 60 octane booster - increased octane by 0.9, power by 4%, torque by 5%, fuel economy no significant change. Cheaper to fill up with super unleaded.

Nitrox Hot Shot Power Boost - octane increased by 1.2. No change in power, torque or fuel economy. The most expensive additive tested - would need four bottles and to spend almost £ 32 to treat a 60 litre fuel tank.

NOS Octane booster - increased octane by 0.4, power by 1.2%, torque by 2%. No significant change in fuel economy.

Overall verdict was that none of these fuel additives were worth it.

hi frosty balls

was the testing done on both diesel and petrol vehicles.

and thanks for reply.

Sorry - my first reply was for petrol additives. Below are the results of Diesel additives that Which? has tested:-

Diesel fuel additives compared

Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 (500ml)* £11.99

Fuel additive's claims

Increases cetane by up to four numbers

Increases power – up to 17.5% more bhp

Increases mpg by up to 7%

Reduces exhaust emissions – 70% less smoke, 20% less carbon

Treats 500 litres of diesel

Findings

Cost per treated litre of standard diesel: £1.08

Extra cost per tankful: £1.44

Cetane: up by 3.5 numbers

Power, torque and fuel economy: no significant change

Which says:

Millers pretty much lives up to its cetane rating claims, but it offers no power or economy benefits. Some emissions fell, but not during urban use. This contrasts with a small increase in soot, but only under motorway conditions.

Is it worth it? No.

*Since our tests, Millers has announced a new product called Millers Diesel Power ECOMAX. The claims are similar, but it may have different effects on performance. Diesel Power Sport 4 is still on sale.

Wynn’s Supremium Diesel (250ml) £5.99

Fuel additive's claims

Reduces fuel consumption

Increases engine power

Reduces noxious exhaust gases by up to 20%

Cetane improver

Treats 250 litres of diesel

Findings

Cost per treated litre of standard diesel: £1.08

Extra cost per tankful: £1.44

Cetane: up by 2.9 numbers

Power, torque and fuel economy: no significant change

Which says:

Wynn's Supremium Diesel does improve the cetane rating and costs less than filling up with ‘premium’ diesel. But we didn’t measure any tangible benefits.

Is it worth it? No.

Redex 0 To 60 Cetane Booster (500ml) £9.99

Fuel additive's claims

Increases the cetane number of diesel fuel by up to two numbers

Increases fuel economy

Treats 50 litres of diesel

Findings

Cost per treated litre of standard diesel: £1.25

Extra cost per tankful: £11.99

Cetane: up by 1.2 numbers

Power, torque and fuel economy: no significant change

Which says:

Redex did boost the cetane rating and reduce carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions on the motorway. But it costs nearly £12 per tankful, and with no signs of the promised fuel economy benefits.

Is it worth it? No.

PD-5 Fuel treatment (250ml) (tested in diesel) £18.50

Fuel additive's claims

Increases engine power (power booster)

Reduces fuel consumption (economiser)

Works with both petrol and diesel

Treats 1,000 litres

Findings

Cost per treated litre of standard diesel: £1.07

Extra cost per tankful: £1.11

Cetane: up by 1.4 numbers

Torque: up 1.7%

Power and fuel economy: no significant change

Which says:

PD-5 Fuel treatment is cheaper than using premium diesel, but we don’t think you’ll notice the marginal torque and cetane increase we found.

Is it worth it? Probably not.

 FrostyBalls

Often wondered about additives myself and their claims

Thanks for the information :) Very interesting read

Interesting to note `Power, torque and fuel economy: no significant change` but what of the emissions, smoke and noise levels ?

Id like to see the results in tests on how successful are the additive packages in premium fuels. :)

smoke would be covered by the emissions, which are mentioned. cheap way to reduce smoke take it easy on the

acceleration.its most noticable in the headlights of the car behind you at night when putting your foot down

i am refering to diesel motors.part of that smoke you are producing is going into your egr and inlet manifold and clogging it up.

Didnt fifth gear a while a go do tests on performance fuels in performance cars and show that performance fuels do perform better in cars that can remap themselves to take advantage of it. So i cant see why adding addatives to a fuel wouldnt make some difference. I know millers ecomax makes mine feel like its got more grunt esp at the low end and gives me better mpg even if I drive it like harder then normal.

i never saw that particular fifth gear program but i was told when they tested fuel addives they found an increase in fuel consumption on the vehicles they used .

did anyone hers watch that program?
