i have read that if there is a rattle when the air con is turned off then it is prob the bearings in the pulley but what if when you switch on the ac the noise stops but returns a few minutes later but only if car is ticking over. ac works fine as regards temp control

Sounds like the bearings in the pulley/clutch have gone. The bearings only run when the clutch is disengaged, hence the noise stops when you switch on the A/C. The noise will come back when the clutch cycles (engages/disengages with the temperature of the evaperator)
