Is there a better or best type of diesel to use? and if so what are the advantages? also (don't ask for much do I  ) what are the downfalls of the "wrong diesel"?

i always used Shell in mine as it is a cleaner fuel and protects the particulate filter.

My personal experience ... i have run 5 tanks of tesco std, then 5 bp standard and then 5 bp ulimate the differences in my case with my driving style are :

negligible between tesco std and bp standard (perhaps 2 mpg improvement) but you end up paying more than tesco fuel...so costlier in the long run...

5mpg average between std and ultimate... if you factor the price in... it makes little difference, pay less with tesco and get less miles, or pay more and get more miles pro-rata, from this perspective I would suggest the BP ultimate for the single reason that it is "good diesel"

The effects of bad diesel is dirtier combustion, soot, clogging EGR, clogging the Particulate Filter (D-CAT)more often, but nothing that a good servicing and maintenance can't manage to keep in order... also lower quality fuel might have more water, or contamination in general, but on the whole the UK fuels are very good, and so long as you replace your fuel filter every 40k as per maintenance interval indications... you should be fine...
