Battery Troubles

Hi lads, not been on this forum before I'm normally on the corolla one but I have a problem.

My father has a 96 toyota landcruiser 4.2td manual 80 series.

It has an electrical problem were if it is not run for 2 or 3 days both the batteries will be completely flat 0v.

After a bit of head scratching I decided to put an ammeter across the batteries to see if there was a drain when the vehicle was turned off (no alarm turned on) this showed that there was no current what so ever being drawn!

Anyone got any ideas or something similar happened to their truck?

Many thanks

Tom

Hi Tom,

There are so many things that could be wrong... First charge the batteries. Clean all dust, dirt, crap, whatever off the tops of the batteries so they are clean and dry.If you could get the batteries tested, would help 'cause one crook Battery can discarge both. Why does this vehicle have two batteries? If it has been an aftermarket fitment involving solenoids and relays etc,you may have a faulty component that is not switching off.//Hookup both positive terminals and (if you can), leave the alarm physically disconnected,(not just switched off.Next get a test lamp and connect it between one negative terminal and the Battery it is supposed to go on. If the test lamp fails to light up try opening the door to test the circuit. The test lamp should light up indicating all is well.If the test lamp lights when you first connect it between the terminal and the Battery, this indicates a problem, you have a drain somewhere in the vehicle. What you do now is, start pulling fuses to indicate the circuit that is causing the drain. When you have finished with that battery leave it disconnected and start on the other one.

When you have finished, batteries hooked up and alarm back online test your discharge again.

If you are using an ammeter or(ampmeter)it must be in series to get an amperage reading(like the test lamp was).If it is a voltmeter it must be in parallel or (across the battery).

Try this on your own car if it has crap all ovr the top of the battery. Get the voltmeter and put the probe on the positive terminal and put the negative probe anywhere on the top of the battery and you'll see why batteries go flat for (no reason.)

Sorry for rambling, good luck let me know how you get on.

Greg.
