Engine Management Light Poss Cat

Hello all, can anyone help?

My Son has a 1.0 Yaris 2001, He recently had a new CAT fitted ( 3 weeks ago) to his Yaris for the MOT, Yesterday he said the car spluttered a bit and the engine management light came on. When he called the AA they said the car will run but the warning light seems to be something to do with the CAT.

Can anyone advise is it the MAF sensor or something else, he is hopefully going to Santa Pod ( Northants)on Friday and would like the car to be ok for the journey. Thank you

Was it a genuine Toyota cat? If not, that may be the cause.. "MAY"..

Non standrad ones are notorious for giving faults on many cars...

Get the garage who fitted it to change it "as it does not work"...

No it was not original however there has been no problems for 3 weeks, could it go faulty, could it be the cat or a sensor? If it is the cat it would be under guarantee.

Could possibly be the 02 sensor. I had one fail in my Accord, made the car a bit spluttery and not tick over without cutting out.

Seems coincidental that you have a new cat fitted, then the EML light comes on!

Take it back to whoever fitted the cat and ask them to check it.

If you boughta Type Approved Cat it should be ok.

I would go back to the supplier and say it does not work..

Onus is on them to prove otherwise as your Yaris says it does not.

If it was cheap and nasty , anything could have gone wrong. Most likely is the ceramic core has started to collapse... driving through puddles when hot, or speed humps combined with poor quality = death to cheap cats..

There are usually 2 sensors one before and after the cat.

Without bamboozling you/talking jargon...

The one after the CAT just checks that the CAT is 'working/there' whilst the first checks and accords fuelling in partial throttle, it will run okay with a duff secondary but not a duff primary.

A tell tail sign of a failing primary o2 sensor is reduced MPG, rough idling since when they fail they fail 'lean' thus the car dumps more fuel in running 'rich' and 'bogging' driving around town.

You really need to get the code read, it very simply to read with a code reader for around £30 off eBay etc as its just OBD2 - a garage will charge you £40-50 for essentially the same thing.

A Maf sensor could also cause this, as well as quite a few other things. A simply check would be to take the MAF sensor out and carefully clean - easy to do TBH.

Cheers

Hi Guys, Thanks for all your replies and help

My son took it back to the garage and when they looked the CAT they had fitted was faulty! Give them there due they accepted responsobility and changed the cat, cleaned the sensors and cleared the management light. So fingers crossed!!!!
