Steering Niggle

Hi, Im seeking the wisdom of fellow Avensis owners to help me with a problem im having. I have just purchased an 07 Avensis 2.0 D4D T3X and all is great expect that when travelling over 70mph the steering wheel vibrates very slightly without affecting the overall handling but its very offputting and leaves me less than confident in the cars capabilities, under this speed and cornering etc is unaffected. I have taken it to kwikfit and had the tracking and balancing done but though it is reduced, the problem is still there. Anyone who has had this problem and solved it, I would be grateful for any and all suggestions.

HI BBMAN

if not wheel balance could be dive shaft problem, damage or loose.

have you tried swopping wheels front to back.if it is still there its not wheels

themselves.

Drive shaft problem..........sounds expensive. Will swap front and back wheels firstly and hopefully this will cure it, otherwise its a less than perfect introduction to the brand. thanks for the advice

it could be that you need new breakpads my avensis started to shake when i put the breaks on at speed changed the breakpads no more shaking. If its not that try realinement at a garage that as the right equipment quickfit only does the basic balancing and tracking try googleing for a specialist i beleave there is one in wakefield west yorkshire, to my knowledge there is only about 4 in the country with the right equipment i am sure it as been posted on this site before

Hi,

Well before you go looking at the more unlikely causes get the basics checked again.

Have you had all four wheels balanced ? the rears can also cause steering vibration - I did not beielve it until I just had the fronts done and it still persisted until the rears were also done.

Did they check all your tyres for any bulges etc ? - you can get them on brand new tyre - like the Dunlops I once got - never again!

Some garages / operators simply cannot balance the wheels properly, so search out a good one - I go over to Alba Tyre services in Leeds where they have a good reputation for tyre/balancing, have a proper selection of weights ( which many do not ) and also specialist equipment to balance the wheels on the stud holes rather than the hub hole. Let them know you have gone to them for their expert help, so they will be extra careful.

Thankyou for the advice and I will try all before fearing the worst, hopefully this will work and the problem will vanish and I can start to enjoy driving this model

I agree georgepg, I had a 1.8 T3-X for 3 years and it always had a slight vibration but at lower speeds particularly noticeable on rougher road surfaces, at the major service 60K miles I had the pads changed all around and all the knocking and vibrations completely disappeared.
