Rav 4 Date Of Manufacture

I bought an ex demo Rav 4 in May this year from a dealer. It was registered on Sept 1 2009 as its first registration. It is the "New Rav 4 " edition. My car insurance is due for renewal early in September so have been checking out various Insurance sites for the best deal.

I have caome across a problem when entering the registration number it comes up with the model as being 2007 - 2008 which it says it got from DVLA, this occurs on every insurance site and consequently shows the value as £14000. I was under the impression that the "New Rav 4" came out in 2009. Can anyone clariry this for me?

Thanks,

Alan

You should be able to tell from the 10th digit of the VIN code;

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number

Just checked, the 10th digit in the VIN code is 0 (zero) which is apparently not used!! I did try a number of sites which decoded the VIN and they all came up with "not a valid VIN". The country code is JT which I understand is Japan from the wiki site. Does Japan use different year codes only I understood these codes were international?

The tenth digit in my VIN is also '0' though it is an 08 vehicle Alan so I'm confused too. Maybe Kingo can throw some light here

You can double check the DVLA info. for yourself here: LINK

Just click on 'Vehicle Enquiry' and follow through.

Thanks for that info, just checked it using the link you gave and it does show the year of manufacture as 2009 thogh the DVLA link to the Insurance companies shows the vehicle as 2007 - 2008 which is causing confusion. Also strange that your VIN has a zero like mine although it was built a year earlier. As you say very confusing!

What's the ninth digit in your VIN Alan? Mine is 8 which matches the year though it's supposed to be a 'verifier' digit.

The ninth digit on my VIN is 3 . Not sure what that means.

That theory is out the window then. Have to wait for Kingo to interpret.

I'm fairly certain they don't use the ISO standard (at least not in the UK). I have in my notes (though I'm not that certain this is correct):

Digits/Meaning

1/Country

2/factory

3/Division

4-5/Body Shape

6-9/Model Code

10-11/Assembly line

12-17/Serial Number

It would be really nice if Kingo could give us the exact meanings

Your RAV VIN will still work in this (even though it is for LC):

http://www.toyota.co.uk/LCA_280710/index.html

Claims mine is 2010.

Even Toyota insurance were slightly clueless with me recently, though to be fair, I think it is handled by a third party. They seemed to struggle identifying the exact vehicle. Surely the 150 D4D versus the older 130 D4D would be the big give away? Still not sure they grasped it.

I'm working out of our Subaru garage for a few days so dont have the exact check sheet in front of me

If you PM me the VIN number I can twell you the exact build date from that. Check numbers used in the VIN are exactly that, a check number with no specific meaning.

I hear of this and similar problems all too often. Once data hits the DVLA there seems to be no way of finding out how they arrived at the content, and even worse getting it changed! Often cars are refered to as a MY10 (model year 10) indicating its a facelift or new shape, but that info doesnt seem to transfer to DVLA. I wouldnt be too worried about what the insurance company think of price at this stage, they would work on the basis of a current market price in the event of a claim and not what price it was worth at the time of taking out the insurance. They wouldnt look at or consider that figure

Kingo

I don't know about the UK models, but here in the US, there is an ID plate located on the driver's door jamb. As you can see from the picture, the date of manufacture is located in the upper right hand corner, so my RAV4 was built in July of 2008. It also shows paint color code (1F7), trim color code (FA10), transmission type (U151E) and so forth:

Built April 2006, 2AZFE Engine, paint code 1F7 - ie silver, Auto transmission.

But I would have thought your registration system or handbook would have given some clues?
