I was wondering if anyone has come across any thermoelectric air cooling systems that could be installed in a small car like the Aygo? They look like they could be the ideal solution for an aftermarket car air conditioner as all they require is a power source(no coolants and no maintenance), could be installed in the engine bay and the cooling side plumbed into the air ventilation ducting.

However, there doesn't seem to be anything available except for small units for cooling electronic equipment.

hi kevin65

have you tried irish air conditioning, very cheap, instantly installed.no maintenance required.

open all windows and drive at 50+.temp controlled by position windows.

just kidding and opologies to our irish members.

Thermoelectric Cooling System

tec_peltier_effect.jpg A thermoelectric cooling system is built using the Peltier effect. The thermoelectric cooling system capitalizes on this technology.

in devices that are used for cooling water, air or other moving medias. The thermoelectric cooling technology to create devices that:

  • Have precise temperature control
  • Are environmentally friendly (no CFC refrigerants)
  • Have no moving parts
  • Are free of noise and vibration
  • Are small and lightweight
  • Localize cooling
  • Have fast temperature response

Advantages of Thermoelectric Cooling Systems

Because of the above properties, small in size, and cost effective.

These thermoelectric cooling system devices eliminate the risk of Freon leaks. Components can be designed to operate together to get the best results in temperature control within a small space. For a product design where minimum size and precise temperature control are required.

These systems are most suited to creating a cold zone on a plate for localised cooling.

A Peltier-element that would have sufficient power to actually cool enough air to cool

the cabin down is likely to be WAY bigger than the current A/C systen and would

probably also sap more power form your car through the electrics (alternator and such).

If you decide you REALLY want A/C after buying the car; it IS possible

to retrofit an original factory system, but it's quite a lot of work.

In the past months two member sof outr Dutch forum did this by themselves...

I bought a small drink cooler big enough for a six-pack that uses the Peltier effect modules. It would cool somewhat, but not nearly as cool as a refrigerator. And not only did it use a tremendous amount of power, but seemed to draw more power as it got older. When it started blowing the 15 amp accessory fuse, I quit using it. I don't see how you could use these modules as an air conditioner in any practical way.

I`m planning on buying a scrapcar and transfer the A/C to our car, I have tried my best to find the articles on the dutch forum, but my dutch is rusty.... Could you point me to the articles and then i will use google translate?

Best Regards

I guess the technology for thermoelectric systems isn't mature enough yet for use in vehicles, but if it could be more effective in cooling then it would be a viable alternative to the traditional compressor based air con systems.

I looked around on the internet for aftermarket retrofit systems, but they are all very expensive (unless you are OK with a large white roof mounted unit!). I would consider retrofitting an original system, but very few of any type of Aygo/107/C1 scrapped in Ireland.
