Hi Guys - I have £8,000 to spend on my next Rav 4, give or take.

Tried, with little success, to find a coherent review comparing a diesel, manual (in both cases) Rav 4 XT-R and XT3.

The XT-R I've seen and like has 64K on the clock, is a 2005/55 with a cherished plate (worth around £400), full Toyota service history, priced at £7,899 (with quite a few scratches on the bodywork but no dents, otherwise very clean);

Or there's a 2007/07 XT3 with 96K on the clock priced at £8,400 (with only a few stonechips on the bonnet - otherwise pristine) and a partial but not that bad Toyota/Nationwide service history.

The XT3 I know is a 135 bhp. I've not been able to establish the bhp of the XT-R and don't particularly want to ring the private seller again.

Which is the most sensible to go for/what would you choose?

Cheers!

Unless I am reading this post wrongly, These are 2 very different vehicles, the XTR is the old shape we call it the 4.2 the XT3 is the "latest" shape we call it the 4.3..The 4.2 xtr was pretty much the top of the range previous model and will have a much higher spec however most 4.2 diesels at some stage suffer from DMF probs (Dual Mass Flywheel) this can be a £1600 repair and you should have a look at the pinned articles at the top of the forum where this is fully discussed..This does not mean its a bad choice as they are truly a great car, I have had both + sometimes wish i still had my 4.2..The XT3 is pretty much the basic model although it is still well specced, It is obviously a bigger car + doesnt have the DMF problems, although 96k is quite high mileage for a 3yr old car but shouldn't be a prob for a car that sounds like its been well looked after, My choice I am slightly biased but if you could stretch to a XT4 4.3 you get a much higher spec + unlike the latest XTR you still get a spare wheel on the back..The 4.2 diesel was 118 bhp by the way :thumbsup: Stew

IF BHP is your thing, both can be "chipped" :yes: Cherished plates can be had from £250 fom the DVLC.. PS you can take out an extended warranty on any Toyota under 7yrs old if you wish..

In my opinion I would go for the later one too. The 4.2 is good but the 4.3 has been loaded with safety features. That is a straight choice between the two given they both fit the budget.

Be sure to drive them both just to satisfy yourself.

Happy hunting.
