D4D Engines

I have recently encountered the dreaded D4-d head gasket failure on my Yaris (56,000 miles).

After searching the forums it seems that there are a lot of other models with D4-d engines that suffer the same fault. Can anybody throw some light on what is the actual cause of these failures.

I am lead to believe that the newer model Yaris were modified to alleviate this fault, if so what was the nature of this mod, also does any body know if the later model cylinder head will work on the earlier engine.

I think we should collate some data to convince Toyota GB to help us out !!!

Hmm, well I know it was a problem on older (Pre-53 plate?) Yaris D4D's, but the dealer should be able to repair that.

Haven't heard of newer vehicles having that problem...
