Im buying it from Monifieth Cars up past Dundee. I asked about the cambelt change and he showed me a japanese sticker on the cambelt cover with 90,000kms written on it which is the milage at which it was changed (so they tell me).

Got a strange week planned for it too.

*Hope* to pick it up on Friday, finances permitting, drive from Dundee to Glasgow and stopping off at Dicksons of Dunblane to have them fit a BOV then continue back to Glasgow. At night head to a cruise in East Kilbride then a spin around Glasgow city centre later on. Monday drop my Rover off at the bodyshop to get it prepped for sale and pick up my Tom's scoop which will have already been painted for the MR2 then an alarm installer is visiting me to pop a Toad AI606 in the car.

Busy busy! LOL

Ha Ha, Great to see another tubby in Glasgow, esp Rev3(like mine)....I think that makes 3 Rec3+ owners in Glasgow now, eh Pizzaboy? Rikki, you'll need to give us a shout so we can have a look at the new baby...Maybe arrange a mini meet with the some of the other mr2's pizza boy knows?

When I was looking at the 2's in Moniefieth, some were a bit dodgy and overpriced, and the big guy trying to sell me one of the car's didn't really know what he was talking about......But maybe that was a one off, certainly your one looks a peach!! when are you getting the 18's? I'm after some 17's and those wheels on it look sweet.

Cheers. Hope to see you out and about soon.

I've got one of those stickers on my engine - it's to tell you when the belt needs changing - not when it was changed. :shutit:

MONIFIETH CAAAARS?!?!?! :censor:

AARGH dont buy cars of em they are total lyin c*nts!! Both MSherry and me coincidently went to see thier so called 'perfect condition' mr2 Turbos when we were huntin for one they were all knackered.

The 90km sticker is b0llox it should state 100,000km and as AE111sr points out...all it means is when it SHOULD BE CHANGED...NOT when its been changed. That in itself shows they dont have a !Removed! clue what they are talking about. They are very dodgy guys and I didnt like em one bit..you shoulda seen the way he ran off from me after I started pointing out evidence of crash damage on their so called 'perfect' cars. And I had to DEMAND to see the auction grade sheets....all their cars are under Grade 3. I didnt like thier attitude one bit either. Never ever beleive what some1 tells you about camblet or servicing work unless they can give you a reciept of the work carried out.

Warnin u now m8 :arrgg-matey:

And I dont want to put a downer on your purchase but did you point out the accident damage to the car? I can see from the pic the right hand side rear bootlid is out of line..its raised (and slightly dipped on the other side) where the panels meet. It looks like the previous owner swapped ends and smacked something. God knows if the subframe underneath isnt twisted. Why dont you ask them? Check all those panels m8. Knock off $$$ of the price.

hmm.sized.jpg

Also..nice wheels...they tend to swap em about between cars to pretty em up..ask them if they have carried out laser re-aliegnment (£80ish)..I garuantee they havent and will fob you off with retarded story of how you dont need it. What about oil, coolant, brakes, auction sheet grade, service history(partial even) and your car is lowered...has the suspension been uprated or is it still standard shockers? If still they could be on thier way out. ***** theres so much to cover and I havent even talked turbo yet :( I wouldnt put anything past em. They ran a mile from me when I asked them all this stuff they were shown up so badly. They couldnt give me proof of anything at all. The proof of timing belt is a must! They 100% havent done it m8 dont be intimidated from their pompous w@nker attitude..cut em down to size and ask em proof of work carried out like any decent garage should.

And to boot..they do non-refundable deposits..thats when I laughed and said goodbye. <_<

I told them who I am and who I work for so they know the script if there is even the slightest possibility of me getting a f*cked car. He gave me a print out of the auction sheet and it's a grade 4 (I saw the sheet on the PC so know its not been tampered with).

I printed off a list of things to check scouted from websites and user groups and everything seemed fine. The test drive was good too. Its true they dont seem to have much of a clue about the cars as the GT4 WRC they showed me had the back of its recirculating BOV in bits and I spotted it and they didnt seem to know.

The wheels dont come with it, they are an optional extra and I will be insisting that the ones I get are balanced and road worthy.

I'll be getting a 3 months warranty so it will be visiting a friend who it Toyota Warranty Burd up in Stirling for a full on ramp inspection and if there anything amiss I'll be demanding it fixed, a refund or compensation - otherwise Latif and Shamir can read about it in full gloss colours in the next issue of Fast & Modified.

Many thanks for alerting me to the dangers with this company, I will be voicing my concerns next time I speak with them!

PS: I take it no-one on here will be in the Dundee vicinity on Friday afternoon to accompany me when I "purchase" the car?

Thanks guys,

Rikki

The lines on the rest of the photos (S2 Pro - 12mp) seem ok BTW.

In a bit of a panic at the moment as what to do. I'm set to pick the car up on Friday and pay the balance (I have a £350 deposit to hold it) and am thinking that I go with my first impression and get the motor but explain in no uncertain terms before I part with the remainder of the cash that it will be going through a detailed scrutineering at a Toyota main dealer in Strathclyde and any faults that are picked up (including the cam belt NOT being changed as I was told) then I'll be wanting recompense.

I actually asked around before calling them and heard nothing but good reports on Monifieth. They were very open when I went to view the car and pointed out a few bits that needed small amounts of attention, they also as previously mentioned gave me the auction sheet as well as the SVA print outs to read over.

Cheers,

Rikki

Ye as long as you get everything in writing from them that the vehicle is in the condition they claim then it should be fine as you have your back covered then. In regards to the checks after purchase from a Toyota dealer thats great too  There isnt anything wrong if the repairs are fine...its just not right if they are telling you its never been in a accident when it seems otherwise.

Oh another thing...the BOV!..The rev3+ runs a MAP sensor meaning you can safely disconnect the BOV pipe running into your airbox in order to create an audible 'paatish' Just block the hole left behind in the airbox. The cool thing here is you can always reconnect it to get slightly better spool thru gears. It sounds very VERY loud(ask MSherry..he did the same thing :) ) which is pretty suprising considering its the stock item. And Ive found the stock BOV has a louder sound than even the Blitz SSQ which a m8 of mine is running on his tubby :D .

Dont mean to panic you its just both me an Msherry both went to Monifieth b4 and it proved to be quite a dodgy place. I wouldnt be able to go out that far tho im afraid m8 (I did say local :) ) a bit too much time needed :(

But good luck in the buying and hopefully it should be sound...cant wait to see it then.

yea meet up on friday deffo and ill bring some of the crew around heh! Micheal ill give you a bell on fri too ill be out at 10:30ish onwards!

Rikki just make sure that they give you every thing in writing in regards to servicing work and accident rapairs carried out on the car. Because when you get the car checked over and you find some dodgy business going on...you have legal comeback. Watch them quiver when you ask them to do this m8.

Your paying them grands for this car so its YOUR RIGHT to make them write out all thier claims on the vehicles condition. If they are a good garage they should be confident in thier cars and therefore will provide you assurance in writing no problemo..because hey..that means they are honest and have nothing to hide eh? If thier attitude goes all funny...then clearly they HAVE something to hide and thats when the real worry begins. If it goes pear shaped at least its £350 quid you will have lost and not grands. Hope all goes well with ye m8

How does this sound:

"I, Latif XXXX partner and representative of Monifieth Cars (Scotland) declare that the white Toyota MR2 GT-S Revision 3 T-Bar Turbo (registration number XXXXXX) has had its cam timing belt replaced at the designated (hand written) mileage as denoted on the warranty sticker affixed to the cam belt cover (as stated on Saturday the 20th of March 2003 when a deposit was placed on the car). I also declare that the car was purchased at auction in Japan and is of a grade 4 condition which confirms that the vehicle has not sustained damage requiring panel and or chassis replacement or repair. I also declare that the car is of a completely sound and road legal nature including but not limited to the engine, gearbox, braking systems, turbo, clutch, suspension, chassis and cooling system and should any fault be found on independent inspection regarding any parts on the car they will be rectified without cost under the three month warranty offered on Saturday the 20th of March 2004.

Signed __________________________ (Latif XXXXX)

Dated ___/____/_______

Witnessed ______________________ (XXXXXX XXXXX)

  • 4 weeks later...

Just to let folks know that the car I got from Latif at Monifieth Cars has turned out to be everything I wanted and more!

I expected the 9 year old import to be in fair condition with a few problems that needed repair but having now had the car for over 3 weeks and had it checked out by many different bodyshops and mechanics it is in A1 pristine condition! This was proved on the rollers only a week ago when she put out an extremely healthy 270bhp at the flywheel (229bhp at the wheels).

Latif has been sound about everything and although other forum members have not had the best run ins from the outset I've been well looked after.

Looking good, running great :)
