I have a 1993 Toyota sr5 with the 3.0 liter V-sucks (6).

150k, 2 head gaskets jobs because BOTH were blown and had to do the valve jobs. I had to do replace the clutch due to a defective disc (1 rivet was sticking out and causing the slipping)

The thing also eats oil like no tomorrow, 2 quarts per 3000 miles.

Now I always thought this was not bad since everything else worked fine.

A friend bought a 93 Chevy 4x4 with a V6 also. In the same 150K he replaced a transmission. With the type of off roading he does, that makes sense to me. It was an AT that got so hot it caught on fire. He put a manual in after that and never looked back.

So why do we as Toyota owner think the dependability is so great when other trucks are more reliable. I never realized this until I was talking to another friend that bought a 2002 Toyota. First 6 months of ownership, 2 of them were in the shop. No kidding. He thought it was the best truck on the planet. These things happen I guess, was his comment. The more I talk to other Toyota truck owners, the more I find that we think occasional blow ups are OK. Great truck, problem free, 200k miles or more and so on and so on.

When I think about it, I should be completely ****** that the truck blew it's head gaskets and burnt its valves. It's never been off-road to tow’d any heavy loads and I do baby her. I had to waste most of a weekend to replace the clutch due to bad quality control. Then to top it off, my friend gets 20 mpg in his Chevy while I get 15 mpg.

Why do we tolerate problems and still consider these trucks dependable and top quality??????

I agree 100% dude. I traded a 1988 camaro IROC, 350 TPI with an automatic for a 1984 4Runner with a carbuerated 22R after I blew a head gasket on my camaro. My toyota has less than half the horsepower, half the torque, only weighs about 400 pounds more than the IROC, and gets 18 mpg {at the best}, compared to 23 mpg in the chevy.

My dad's 2001 V6 Tacoma TRD has already had clutch problems, bubbles forming in the paint and a few other things with only 48,000 miles and conservative driving. Plus it has absolutely no low end, only gets 18 or 19 mpg, and won't pull a godd*mn thing. I don't care if a toyota will last a billion miles, the sacrifice in power for reliability is unacceptable, and their reliability is overrated.

with respect, 150k is a lot of miles for any engine.... v6's need particular attention when it comes to keeping them nice... I disagree though because I think v6 engines are GREAT.

if you're more bothered about longevity and mpg why don't you try a toyota hilux truck with a 2.0 Turbo Diesel engine?

just a thought

yeh yeh

i too do not understand the toyota fanatical mystique

i hav a 88 4x 2.4

but it is pretty dependable

it has relatively few flaws

toyota makes sum really high quality stuff

(parts and materials)

that is not cheap...

a lot of it is superior to the average

the 3.0 has those 2 flaws

but both are fixable with new parts

wut gets me is toy's advertising

even a honda ad has a giant toy sign in a racing segment...

their signs are EVERYWHERE in the u s

thier indy 300 race is this weekend

just exactly how much cost duz this put into every new vehicle?

every part for sale?

there aren't many other makes who's 88 would compare favorably to mine...

if any

i like to make fun of 'dr.' toyota

toyota's fruity new logo

toyota as an entity

and especially it's history

were toyotas made of plywood in the war, like the zero?

sumtimes i look at my front ifs suspension and think -

'wut if the whole thing bent back from a hard bump?

would i know?'

 :o

i better go make sum measurements...

:!Removed!: :eek::crybaby:
