Hi, i just want to ask if someone out there knows why my engine hesitates when its cold. well during the summer the engine works perfectly at all times no hesitations at all when you accelerate. but when winter comes i have problems with it when the engine is cold and it has not been run for like 12 to 24 hours. so the first 30 minutes of running it has problems it hesitates when you accelerate. if you really want to accelerate it harder it hesitates and it makes this hard sounds and shakes the car kinda hard every five seconds if you really accelerate it. well this is the second winter it has been doing this but only when the engine is cold when it gets hot after using it for 30 minutes it works okay so i just let it go like that for a while but now lately even after i use it for 30 minutes it kinda hesitates when you accelerate from an rpm of 2 to almost 3 but other rpms its okay. hhmm if any of you know what is wrong can you please let me know thanks a lot. my engine its a 4 inline cylinder 2.0L and its the 3sfe toyota camry 1990 engine.

I had a very similar problem with my 1986 corolla. My car suffered the exact symptoms you describe. It was the auto-choke mechanism. Toyota fitted cars around this time with a badly designed 'wax' type auto choke mechanism insted of the electric coil type. You should be able to work out which type you have by removing the air-filter unit. The wax type has coolant hoses passing through a cylindrical unit bolted onto the side of the carb.

I your car has this type of auto-choke then the best solution will be to replace the entire carburetor as this type of choke is factory set.

well i also have a little problem that comes up when the car is at idel it does well its ususally when the engine is hot that the engine idel gauge does not stay constant it Slightly moves up and down not a major problem but yeah it does that i think its from the conpresion of the car. or i am just quessing. does any body know anything about it and how to fix the problem.

I don't know, But I do know they should all be with in 10 pounds of each other. The closer the better.

so if you have a 160 155 153 110 number 4 would be bad.

"Most" idle problems like you are having are from vacumm leaks. Listen for a sucking or whistleing sound, look for rubber hoses that have fallon off or are not pushed on thight.

does that seem reasonable the compressions. well for some reason when i drive and i am in 2 or 3 or 4 gear and i cruize betweem 2 and 3 rpm at constant speed the car likes hesitates or shakes every 10 seconds or so i think its my clutch cause its a stick shift engine. what do you think

Not the clutch, the compression is fine.

The clutch really only works when you press the peddle in. So driving at 2 or 3 grand the clutch is not involved.

To test for a miss yourself.

start the car, put your hand in the exhaust stream coming out the tail pipe. Everytime the car fires it creates a wind that blows out the exhaust pipe. It may be hot so be carefull, But really not too hot. Anyway when the spark plug files the wind comes out the pipe in a pattern like a constant drum beat. The drummer should never miss a beat if he does, that is a Miss. The spark plug didn't fire so no wind was created.

After you feel it a few times you will begin to hear it as well.

Well, you could hear it all the time, you just didn't know what to listen for.

I think the problem is small. It needs looked at but I think the motor and trany and all are in good shape.

hey thanks for the good info you provided me with MyV6Flys, it is true my car does not follow a very good beat it sometimes does but not for long and not that constant so yeah i belive that the spark plugs sometimes does not fire or not a the right time. so do you know what i can do to fix the problem.

Change out the plugs then the wires if the miss is still there.

Just for fun. When it's dark out, lift the hood and start the car, look for sparks coming from the wires or plugs.

Not that you will see it, but if the wires get bad enough they will leak, allowing ther spark to show at night.

Sure sign you need wires.

good luck.
