Summer is unofficially over with thunder and lightning due in parts of the country this weekend and damp weather predicted until November, forecasters said.

Over the next five days most people will see some sunshine and some showers, and some areas could also be thundery Photo: GETTY The Met Office said rain showers were likely to be regular until September but others predicted it could last well beyond that, with no chance of an Indian summer.

However, the forecasters said temperatures should remain around average for the time of year.

The inclement weather affected large parts of the country yesterday, with localised flooding in Norfolk, heavy downpours in central London, Yorkshire, and the East Midlands and three people struck by lightning while watching the Red Arrows at an airshow in Suffolk.

The wet end to summer is in marked contrast to the scorching weather which much of Britain enjoyed throughout June and July.

Parks in London and the south east, many of which have become yellow from lack of rain, are likely to benefit from the extra watering.

Sarah Holland, a spokeswoman for the Met Office, said: "Unfortunately things are set to remain a bit unsettled over the next few days.

"There will be a mixture of sunshine and showers over much of the UK. On Saturday the heaviest of the rain will be in eastern and central parts.

"You will get some bright spells at times, so it won't all be grey. As far as Saturday's temperatures go, the maximum will be around 66F (19C). The warmest places will be London and eastern areas.

"The unsettled weather is likely to stay with us into the second half of August - over the next five days most people will see some sunshine and some showers, and some areas could also be thundery.

"Temperatures for the next few days are going to struggle to reach above 68F (20C)."

The national average maximum temperature for a day in August is 66.02F (18.9C).

Jonathan Powell, of Positive Weather Solutions, which collates weather reports from volunteers nationwide, said: "September is going to be wetter than average for most of the UK.

"There is no sign of a sustained warm or dry period, so we can forget any chance of an Indian summer. October will follow suit but the weather turns a corner going into November into a drier spell."
