1.6 Sr Clutch Vibration

Hi all

I have a 2009 Toyota Auris 1.6 SR and I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the same clutch pedal vibration as I am ?

When I accelerate reasonably hard and rev the engine around the 3500 – 4500 RPM mark I can feel a vibration when I depress the clutch pedal about ¾ of the way down when I am about to change gear.

I can also sit parked up and rev the engine to the same revs and depress the clutch pedal and get the same vibration feeling. So I can safely rule out road vibration.

The vibration isn’t a strong feeling but rather faint. The only way I can describe it is if you can imagine resting your foot (wearing a shoe) lightly on an electric shaver ! More of a buzz than a knocking vibration. As I say this isn’t a strong vibration but it is only felt at the ¾ point.

It is also important to point out that the clutch doesn’t vibrate at any other point other than ¾ way down.

My clutch doesn’t slip, judder or feel strange in anyway, it purely the vibration that gets really annoying and distracting once you have noticed it.

I just wondered if this was a “characteristic” of the car or do I have a problem ?

Thanks

Have you owned the car from new ? If so has it always done it from new ?

I once had a new clutch/flywheel fited on a Carina II that owned from new. It was replaced under warranty for a known fault (judder when cold due to change from asbestos lining).

The point is that the replacement was never as "smooth" as the original... it was just as you describe, a slight vibration felt through the pedal. I could only assume it was down to how accurately the replacement had been centered.

I would say it's not normal... new original clutches are usually super smooth and light.

Hi Mooly

Thanks for your reply.

Yes I have had the car from new and I guess it has always done it. I didn’t notice at first as I “ran it in” for a long period as I am always careful with new cars. It was only when I started to use it and rev it up more I noticed.

I have been back to the dealer and they say it is a characteristic of the car but I just wanted to know if I was being lied to.

The temperature or weather doesn’t seem to affect it at all it is purely around those RPM’s.

I just wondered now I have mentioned it if other people might test their own and let me know. It’s probably something most people wouldn’t notice.

As you bought it new the dealer should be more than happy to let you try another to see if it's the same.

Anything like this is very subjective... and the only way you will be happy is to see for yourself.

Ask and see what they say :)

I used to have the 1.6 5 speed 124 auris and now i bought the new facelift 1.6 auris..At the old one i had the same feeling you mention and it was just the feeling of revs on the clutch pedal..I dont think it is a problem..I ve done 64000 km with that car till I crashed it :crybaby: ..And thats why I bought the new now..The new one with the 6 speed doesnt have that rev feeling on the clutch..Anyway I dont think its a problem..

Hi Mooly

I have just been to the dealers and tried a similar car to mine but not exactly the same. There was some vibration in that pedal also but not the same amount as mine.

Talking to the mechanics I am starting to get the impression that this is a known issue.

I am booked to go back and I am going to try to find out more. I will post back later with my results.

Hi nicecar

Thank you for writing and letting me know about your experiences with the clutch pedal vibration problem.

It is comforting to know I am not the only one who has noticed this and you have made me feel much better knowing that your car went up to 64000KM without any problems.

I always thought that any vibration in engineering was bad news as it causes rapid wear and tear, however your post makes me think I am worryingly unduly.

I am starting to think that it is the hydraulic pipes vibrating down to the pedal or something. I have tried packing rubber behind them at strategic places and this has worked a little. However I didn’t want to be masking a more serious problem which is why I am asking here.

Thanks nicecar for taking the time to put my mind at rest.

Hi

I just thought I should come back and update this thread for others with the clutch pedal vibration problem.

After a discussion with a workshop manager at a dealership my car is being repaired under warranty.

It turns out that there is a fault with petrol Toyota Auris’s built before very late 2009. The clutch assembly is very different now with much stronger looking parts fitted as replacements.

Just to remind people, the effect you are feeling for is a slight buzzing when depressing the clutch pedal at about 3500 to 4500 RPM.

I was fobbed off several times by the dealership until one chap kindly told me the truth and accepted it was a fault that justified a warranty repair.

I suggest you check your cars for this and if you are still within warranty then take it back ASAP !

That's great you are getting it sorted... it's infuriating when dealers say "oh... never had that before".

Keep us updated how it all turns out :)

Hi

I know its difficult to describe the feeling in the clutch between gear change , it feels to me like tension in the clutch pedal , my car has ben doing this now for around two months and i notice it every time i take the car out now , the higher the revs between gear change the more noticable the tension / vibration is , its been on my mind to take the car back to the dealers to get it checked out , reading this thread has made my mind up , so i'll be contacting my dealer in the next two weeks when i'll have time to spare to get it booked in and assessed .

have tried revving my 1.6 sr 3500 rpm to 4500 rpm and cant say i feel any vibration at all, but i still have the intermittent slight clunk/clonk noise when letting the clutch out when changing from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd , maybe 50% of the time as mentioned by a few other owners in old threads on here, dealer told me its normal on this car ,so i just try and forget about it

Hi

The feeling is more of a light buzzing than a tension.

However if your car was built before 2010 and still in warranty then take it back !! The dealer will try to fob you off (as usual) but hang in there and get them to change it.

The excuses they gave me before finally coming clean about it were….

They couldn’t feel anything.

Then they could feel it and said it was normal.

Natural resonance point of the engine !

All Toyota Auris’s do it. (Until I pointed out I had tried another test car).

Finally admitted they knew it was a problem in pre 2010 petrol cars.

Don’t forget any vibration in anything mechanical is serious as it rapidly wears parts out. I suspect Toyota hope and assume the clutches will hold out for over 3 years and so they are in the clear with regards to the warranty. They certainly won’t want to be making another recall !!
