Avensis 1.8 Leanburn Engine Lambda Sond

Hi guys, I drive a 1998 Avensis 1.8 with 7A-FE leanburn engine. The engine light went on couple of months ago and according to the mechanic, I should replace the lambda sond which would cost me 600 euros at Toyota dealership. I also checked the aftermatket but you can only get the lambda manufactured by Denso which is 300 euros (still a lot for a lambda). I was thinking to install a generic lambda which would cost around 100 euros but I am not sure whether it will fit and do the work with that particular engine. Any thoughts from someone with similar experience would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a different model avensis. I bough my denso lambda sensor from www.europarts.com(you specify your car reg number to get correct parts). Sure they would ship abroad (hopefully thats why they are called euro). Mine cost 65 pounds which at a guess is around 80 euros. I looked at generic but was put off as I couldnt tell for sure if the connector was correct and if I picked the wrong item it would very quickly become an expensive job.

Hardest part was removing the old sensor which has seized solid due to heat.

Hi,

Well I had the same problem, but ended up paying 50 euros for a secondhand one from a scrap yard - still working 18 months and 2 MOT tests later !

You can check the error codes yourself, you do not need any special equipment see this thread for details.

My link

If its error code 21 and the check light is staying on all the time then its likely the heater part of the sensor is gone.

If the check light just comes on for a few minutes then goes off, more an actual sensor problem - if it only comes on now and then it might simply be worth living with it if there are no other problems.

As for getting the sensor off, gave the two nuts some penetrating oil overnight, came off real easy.

Generic sensors do not work / do not have the mounting flange needed for the 7AFE
