Rims (again!)

Okay, if u all remember initally i was gonna get some 17's on my 2 - 215/40/17 front & 235/40/17 rear.

Then there were other posts sayin the ride was crap on these so i changed my mind.

Then a bit after it was said that the 14's on a rev1 flex too much, so it's bettter gettin a set of 15's...

Now my question is this:

Keeping in mind i dont give a damn about comfort, if the rides hard as f, i don't care, if my passengers complain they can walk!!!

I only care about performance, i.e. handling on corners etc.

So...

If i want (mostly) uncomprimised handling on corners, should i get 15's or would 17's suffice?

Cheer's fella's & ladies (dunno what the "female" equivalent of fellas is... :P )

Also if going for 15's i'd get a design similar to the stock mr2 15's, sweet jap racer look, and 17's would be narrow split rim's.

I've just had this issue and sorted it now.

I had 17's on the car. Look awsome - but the handling was not what id heard about and the ride comfort is *******.

So, i've bought some original 15's for £50.00 and a man in Chesterfield has brought them back to life - they look better than when they first came out the showroom...

I've been in an MR2 with original wheels and they handle and feel so much better. I get a lot of 'shuddering' sometimes when cornering with the 17's on but it doesnt happen when on the stock rims.

I think Bibbs mentioned he had put 16's on once? maybe that is what your after? Bibbs???

my opinion is 16" are overall best grip easier to control once the back steps out good track size,.... but 15"s you have more feedback and so less likely to lose it in the first place, ride quality will be better than 16", 15" also better on regular road surfaces, keep better contact with bumpy **** roads.

17" is only really for looks in my opinion, rubbish on bad road surfaces, bumpy as, no feedback at all as to when they are going to let go they do look nice though.

I had my car on the track with both 15" and 16" and all i can say is i got round a bit quicker on 16" more grip but it did deaden the feel a bit, 15" car felt more alive, more 'fun'. I wouldn't even contemplate 17" if you want the most fun.

my 16" ;-

on my 15" at combe, see that rear side wall flex, you can really feel when your right on the limit.

I only care about performance

I'd go for superlight 17's .. so you can get the width and the feeling from the unsprung weight ..

and with superlight it means you can't go for Kahn/Fox etc .. you need to go for BBS/Enkei/Momo .. and then actually look at the weights ..

my all time favs has to be the OZ Super Lagerra...hmmm

Oz are another good brand (couldn't think of them when I was typing my mail).

Look at F1 and WRC .. not many Kahn alloys there

[initiate dunse mode]I find the best types of wheels are round ones[/terminate dunse mode]

Nah mate .. they just need to be flat at the bottom ..

nice one, cheers for all the input guys.

15's would be the best for feel etc, but i do wanna show off a little... <_<

so i think i'll go halfway with 16's.

cos the 16's dont look small on steve's 2, compared to the 15's i've seen on 2's.

basically i'll look to get some jap rims imported, expensive i know, but they do look nicer imo compared to most uk styled ones.

am i right in takin ur post (bibbs) to mean that the lighter the better, or is there such a thing as too light?

thanx again,

The lighter the better .. but then they damage more easily ..

(and 16" tyres are more expensive than 17"s)

i'm bored too, just sat and watching cartonns for about 4hrs straight. no one's up for going out 2nite, and i can't be assed walking/drivin to m8's house in this poo weather!

Just gonna sit and watch some more initial d, then resist the urge to go out and try & drift.

Oh yeh, i got that list of xbox games done, pretty much i think i only have a few lest to add, when i find em. I know i have some others but they're mixed up in one of the other spindles somewhere, to lazy to look :D

if ya pm me ur email addy i'll mail the list (excel format) to ya bud.

I'm a poser.....so I'm off for 18s.........purely for looks nice thin 5 spokes where the spoke goes to the outside edge of the rim so they look like 19s !!!!

Ain't interested about handling, now I'm of old age (30) I just like to tootle around on Sundays looking cool in my flat cap ( with my nodding dog and travel sweets ).....! Plus if I want to go to the track I just put me standard wheels back on. !

I had a set of 17s with 225/40/17 tyres all round on my old 4x4 Calibra and have to say that overall the handling was better due to less sidewall flex over the original 15s sure it tramlined a little in any road repairs I ran into.............however it was 4wd.......it remains to be seen how the MR2 fairs !

17's in the front and 18's in the back.... they look huge :D

well i gotta say wherever i live, and close by the roads r absolutely awful!!!

patched to hell, and potholed to heaven it really, really, REALLY annoys me!

Hey Zero,

My current car ( IMOC profile ) has 17's on. Check the link for the exact spec and it rides OK.

My old Rev 3 G-Ltd had stock 15" wheels.

On the issue of feedback I believe tyre choice makes a far greater difference than wheel size.

I would recommend either of these choices. Don't go for 16's as they are the worst of both worlds. If you do go for bling 17's make sure you get the correct spec:

Front 17 x 7.0 JJ ( 35 mm offset ) 215 / 40 - 17

Rear 17 x 8.0 JJ ( 35 mm offset ) 235 / 40 - 17

You should also try to get wheels with the correct centre bore (60 mm) or else get some hub centric rings to adapt the wheels. This will prevent the annoying vibration you can get if you use a lug centric fittment.

If you have bags  of money and want the best bling I would suggest SSR or perhaps Rays Volk Racing. Both have appropriate sized forged wheels.

Otherwise there's lots of choice at a more reasonable price .

Cheers,

Luckies
