Anyone Experienced This?

Had my gen3 for 12 months now and occasionally had a problem when parked on a downward slope (facing down)

Start the car up and go into reverse to reverse out of the parking space. Displays shows R selected. Release foot brake and car rolls forward as though not in gear. Try neutral then reverse again and same problem. Have to switch off and start again to get it into gear.

Today it happened again and had to try three times before it succesfully went into reverse. Mt wife, who also drives the car was with me and just to confirm I wasn't doing anything silly, I got her to watch me, and she confirmed that I was following the correct startup procedure.

Just interested to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Does the engine fire up?

On a steep slope you've got to really give it some welly.

Reversing up steep slope in a prius usually needs some oomph from the petrol engine.

This is so it can generate enough electricity to drive the electric motor.

There isn't enough ommph in the HV Battery to do serious reversing and if you are on a steep slope,

you will end up rolling down the hill even in if you are in reverse.

I have a steep drive and reversing up that in the prius is interesting.

Have you tried using hill start assist?

This will hold the prius on the brakes for a couple of seconds after you take your foot off the brake pedal while you move your foot over to the throttle. Also put the Prius in PWR mode to make the throttle more responsive.

edit: Also try waiting for a minute after powering on (so the prius can get through the start up routines) before reversing.

Hi. Thanks for this - you have answered a question I had about my gen 2 Prius that doesn't have hill start - I didn't understand why the petrol motor was needed when the electric motor has so much torque.
