Carina Carburettor Problems

I have a F reg Toyota Carina 11 1.6 GL Automatic that has been very reliable till now.

On cold starting the automatic choke cuts out to quickly causing the engine to cut out, also when the engine is hot it occasionally ticks over at 650rpm and sometimes ticks over correctly at 850 rpm.

Any advise how to corect this fault appreciated.

Thanks

Given your description, I'd be surprised if the auto-choke is at fault. The problem sounds like one of the idle jets is partially blocked with some debris. Unfortunatley there is no Haynes manual for this model as you will no doubt be aware.

The idle speed is 850rpm and if the problem isn't too critial/annoying you could tweek the idle speed upwards slightly as a short-term fix.

To do this there is an adjuster which is situated to the bulkhead side of the carburetor. It has a white plastic disc type handle angled at about 45degs. You can reach it without having to remove the air-filter unit standing on the near-side. It adjusts by hand (no tool is required)

Would debris in the jets also cause the automatic choke to cut out when the engine has not reached operating temperature.

What I have also noticed is that the rev counter used to be stable at idle and now shuders up and down.

If I was looking at a part breakdown would I be looking at the choke or the Carburettor or as in a previous car the bi metal.

The electric element type chokes fitted do not 'cut-out' as you believe. They are fitted with a coil which only operates if current is passed -> no current = choke full on;

current present ->coil heats up -> and when at full temp the choke flap is fully open (there is no 'cutting-out') These can be adjusted but this is not the problem you have - best left alone.

The uneven revs you are experiencing at idle will be due to grit in the idle jets of the carb. (these are by-pass jets which allow fuel mixture into the engine when the throttle plate is fully closed)

(I presume that the engine runs ok when the car is being driven?)

The auto choke problem does sound a little strange, but if its still OK to drive, i'd leave it as the carbs are very comples.

The wonky idling could be caused by other factors,EG a breakdown in the HT system somewhere.

You could go to a carb centre to get them to strip and clean the carb out, but i'd be temped to leave it as i dont think there are many places competernt to do it, and no doubt theyd manage to get some of the 22 vacuum pipes mixed up somewhere.

and the idel should be 900rpm on the auto, which is about an indicated 950, the the white thing that you turn is the secondary throttle balancer, and when you pull out a pipe going to a pot on the carb (cant remember which one it it) the RPM should be 1400 (about 1480 indicated) and you use this screw to adjust the RPM, and when correctly set up, makes a lot of difference.
