Reversing Sensors

Has anyone got any views on retrofitting reversing sensors to an Auris? The new toy is an SR180 on a 57 plate but lacking the sensors. I've been quoted £230 for genuine Toyota parts for the rear alone. Aftermarket setups are around £50. The instructions I've seen for the genuine ones seem to involve taking most of the car to bits to route the wiring! I'm not fussed about this but I'd prefer not to do it if possible . . .

What do I get for the extra £180? Which aftermarket systems do you recommend?

I'd appreciate your advice.

I had the factory fit system fitted to my Auris - a four sensor sytem that works well. However have a look at the Reversing Aids test done by Auto Express in May 2010 (www.autoexpress.co.uk) - they recommend three systems which start from £ 50.

Hi,

I fitted my own after market kit as soon as i bought the car. Only cost me £20 but the build quality is excellent. still working and never given me any problems. Here's my install thread with pics if you're interested.

Not what you are asking but I found the easipark lens really good on the Auris due to the steep glass angle. Lens is hinged so can be set at best angle. When a vehicle pulls up behind and you think it looks close in the normal mirror, I find looking in the lens and I am actually able to read the number plate of that car. Fitted mine high up in top left corner of glass as viewed from back of car.

hi

great post.

as sensor positioning is everything,i suggest what i do to make sure they are in the correct place is to take a tape measure and visit a dealers and find the same model as yours there. with sensors.

then measure from the ground to the centre of the sensor on one of the outside ones.note the distance.

then visuely line it up with something on the rear of the car like a part of the lens and note this.

this only needs to be done once on one side,as the other side will be the same.

mark of position on your car on both outside sensors with felt pen.measure between markings, devide by three

that gives you position for the other two.rember to get height right

once marked off double check all measurments, cos once the holes are cut,you cant put anything back.

this advice is for a four sensor kit.

Thanks for your comments. Reinforces my natural inclination to go "aftermarket" and pocket the difference. I was really surprised that the genuine Toyota kit involved so much wiring; having read the thread about retro fitting cruise control where the wiring was already fitted, I expected the reversing sensors to be a "drill holes and plug in" job. Thanks again, you've convinced me to save my cash - but, since it's "senior management's" car, it'll probably go on some more toys - bluetooth retrofit, anyone?
