Hello And A Techincal Question

Hello All

firstly i have tried the forum search and google search but unable to find any specific help with my question.

My brother took his 03 Rav 4 2.0 vvti "special edition" to the main stealer as it was leaking quiet badly coolant.

The main stealer took off the inlet manifold and found the leak to be supposedly coming from the back of the block at the head gasket joint.

I havent seen the car myself as yet but i havent heard of a head gasket leaking badly like that which lead me to believe its the a cracked head or block that has gone, i am a good diy mechanic having done a few head gasket in my time i am wondering if changing the gasket is a relatively easy thing to do on a rav or if its a pig?? as the price for a head gasket change is £1300, cracked head is £2600 and cracked block is £4000!!!!!!

Also is cracked heads and blocks a common thing on ravs?? i notice there is a guy who is selling his cracked one a few topics down.

Many Thanks all for any of your help in advance

Welcome to the club.

Cracked heads aren't a common problem on diesels (the other one posted) and the certainly are not on VVTi's. If you are competent with motors you should take the head off and look. However, be sure to confirm you think it is coming from the same place.

I might be able to find some info on changing the head gasket but have to go to work now!!!

Cheers.

Thank you for the warm welcome

If you have got any info on changing the head gasket it would be appreciated, especially in regards to torque setting, torque sequence if there is one, etc etc

I am looking to get over to the garage today to have a look at the engine with the manifold off.

Hope to hear from you once your back from work

Many thanks

Don't drive any more bothy!

Anyway, I looked to see what I have and I can't find anything on a 4.2 VVTi. I did find the stuff on the 4.3 which will have some differences but should give an idea of the scale. If you go on tech docs, you can download the instructions for a 4.3 for about €3.
