Tyre Wear

Hi Guys

Just joined the club and hope its usefull!

Sorry if this question has come up before.

I have a 2009 (June) Avensis Tourer 2.0 Diesel TR and just coming up to 16,000 miles.

I have noticed the two front tyres are wearing faster than any other new car I have had, on my last two Nissan X Trails I did not change any tyre until 40.000.

The Tyres fitted from new are Bridgestone,my question is has anyone else had or having the same problem?, has anybody fitted or can recommend a better tyre as I do not think they will last much more than 20.000!

Mike

sounds fairly reasonable to me 20000 miles from a set of tyres, my last car a jaguar would not do anything like that but then i only do around 7000 miles a year so that is nearly 3 years motoring for me.

i now have the 2010 avensis tourer t4 2.0 litre diesel so will keep an eye on things.

someone with more experience than me will no doubt be along shortly to let you know if that is good or bad.

my car is fitted with goodyear excellence tyres but bridgestones are usually fairly good so may be worth checking to see if the wear is in any particular area if not and wear is over the whole tyre will not doubt be a trait of the car or your driving manner (no offence meant)

i have no experience of 4x4 cars so cannot comment on their tyre wear.

When we had two new tyres fitted last August on our Mazda 2, I was chatting to the manager of the tyre fitting centre who had a Mondeo diesel. He could only get 8000 miles out of the front tyres on his car, and he said the days of high mileage tyres are over.

Thanks Guys

Sounds like I need to talk to some Tyre experts, as I have never had less than 30.000 miles from any new car I have had.

OR sell the car! pitty as otherwise its a good one, apart from the stupid handbrake position.

Glad I've read this...

I've been doing 30k a year for the last 26 years in my job as a service engineer. I love my Avensis which is on a personal lease but MY GOD - TYRES! I've had more punctures in the 18 months I've had this vehicle than in all the last ten years - FOUR, all rear. I do carry a lot of spares such as tools, jigs and parts which weigh down the boot somewhat but I do keep the tyres inflated to 40psi as per the recommendations.

In addition to this the fronts are showing the bars already, having been replaced in April. The lease company do insist on mid range tyres.

I had yet another motorway blowout last week and while I was waiting for the tyre to be replaced at the tyre place I read a motoring magazine which showed that some cheap Chinese brands on test gave a massive 600% increased stopping distance compared to premium tyres in the wet. Frightening!

Hi to a fellow Tynesider. When I bought my last car, an Octavia 2.0 tdi, a couple of people told me it would eat front tyres due to the torque. I found I actually got about 18,000 from the fronts. My '58 2.2 D4D Avensis has just gone through the second set of fronts at 24,000 miles. The first set were Goodyears and the second set Falkens. Both makes behaved in a very similar way and lasted almost exactly the same number of miles.

The main difference between the two cars is that the Avensis doesn't handle as well as the Octavia. It rolls more and although the grip is OK I think that the amount of roll probably contributes to the wear and together with the high torque from the turbo diesel you are never going to get long tyre life.

The rears look like new incidentaly.

Hi Guys

Interesting comments from everyone about tyres.

What is so interesting, before I retired I had two Nissan X Trails both from new and traveled everywhere in them in all conditions, Both give excellant tyre wear for the size of car, one I changed Tyres at 38.0000 and the other 44.000 miles and as said I think I will be lucky to get halve of that with the Avensis Tyres.

Interesting comments from Mikeyblue about Goodyear Tyres as I have had Goodyear before which have proven to be very good, but I may look carefully at my old favorite's Dunlops or Michelin's when I change, or as Ooarrlatvian comments is it a matter of you gets what you pay for!.

I got my Avensis 2.0 D T2 Tourer in March 2009, it has now done 59,000 miles. I needed new front tyres at 37,500 miles.

A previous company car years ago was a 1.6 patrol cavalier, the original front tyres on that were replaced at 65,000 miles.

Hello RK123456

Now I know I am not going mad, changing at 37.500 miles I would be happy with, as a matter of interest what make of Tyres are fitted to your car?

Hello Tynesider.

I thought somebody would ask what make the tyres are but it was dark last night when I posted.

I've just been out to have a look and can report the following:

The original factory fit tyres (front ones lasted 37,500 miles, the back are still ok) were Bridgestone Turanza ER300 205/60/R16 92V

The new front ones fitted at 37,500 miles are Michelin Energy saver 205/60/R16 92V. I deliberately specified the T2 Avensis tourer because it has steel wheels with trims, I do not like alloys as they are too prone to damage from potholes or kerbing.

The Avensis is a company car managed by a 3rd party company, they have the say when tyres are replaced and they generally have to be near the legal limit before replacement.

I also mentioned that years ago, I got 65,000 miles out of the front tyres on a 1.6 petrol cavalier, that was a light engine so not the weight of a 2 litre diesel engine and my motoring was mainly motorways.

Tyre wear comes down to two things. Grip or Longetivity. You can't have both by design.

I drive my 2.0vvti on Bridgestone Potenza RE 050 (not the Toyota standard fit tyre) and I drive it hard. My front tyres last about £15-18k and cost about £110 each.

Now if I wanted I could change to a harder compound tyre and get more miles but the tyre will not grip as well. Now you will all say "but my tyre grip is fine" - well therefore it suits your driving.

My tyres are great in wet/dry but snow - forget even going out.

I always remember my first Toyota, an MR2 - one of the last proper MR2s 1998 model and rear wheel drive. The standard Yokohama's were rubbish and after spinning on a roundabout (total 360) I started reading the MR2 forums. At that time the Bridgestone Potenza S2 were all the rage. I changed and what a difference to road holding. Like driving on rails. I drove that car on the autobahn's (managed 152mph downhill) but was managing about 15k from the rear tyres. Snow driving was very dangerous.

Go look on mytyres.co.uk and compare customer ratings of tyres

Hope you find this info useful.

I know the problem. My 2005 T-Spirit has done 14,500 miles on it's original Dunlop SP Sport 215/45/R17 W tyres. I just had the car back after MOT test. Warned that one of my tyres is nearly down to one of the tyre's warning bars, I believe it's the tyre is legal until the tyre has worn down to the second bar. I'm sure I used to get at least double that mileage out of tyres on other cars. I am a very slow driver these days and corner slowly and rotated the wheels when I realised they were wearing fast.

The other warning (advisory notice) was the handbrake travel was getting very high (9 click to fully on) after 14.500 miles, I adjusted this this afternoon... but that is another story.

Dear All Toyota Lovers,

I have a Corolla Liftback 1.6 110 HP (Levin) AE111 Year 1999/2000 (90k miles). I bought it two years ago and on its four wheels there was Bridgestone 330 EVO (manufactured 2003-2006) I asked the man who sold it to me and it seems that they have been on the car for 6 years (2 years I did 15k miles) and they did a well 50k miles. The front ones need to be changed now. Which tyre brands would you advise for 15" rims and 175/65/15 sizes?

Thanks

welcome to the club

but you are in the wrong forum if you have a Corolla so I would repost in the Corolla forum.

Also, you may have different brands available in Turkey than here in the UK.

Hello, welcome to the forum,

as you have had good service from the tyres on your car I would recommend that you get the Bridgestone B330 EVO again as they have very good 5 star test reports here in the UK.

Regards Pete.

An update:

My March 2009 2 litre diesel Avensis Tourer came with the factory fitted Bridgestone Turanza tyres.

I wasn't impressed with these tyres, the front pair only lasted 37,500 miles and were replaced with Michelin Energy saver.

The car is now at 92,000 miles and the Michelin Energy Savers are still on the front, that's 54,500 miles, they are down to about 2mm so will need replacing soon.

In my opinion, Michelin Energy Savers are the tyres to choose on this car for long tyre life.

Big heavy car like the Avensis (mk 1) 20k on front is about right, twice that on the back (if you do not rotate as recommended), driven mainly country roads and motorways on Pirelli and Dunlop.

It is imperative that the tracking is spot on since I have had a few sets burnt down pretty quickly, more so than the other cars which I have when the tracking has been out. Some Toyota dealers are doing offers at the moment, approx. £50 last time I went to RRG. Try "align my car" for decent independent.

BTW you cannot compare same make of tyres across different models, the Corolla is a smaller car therefore tyres will wear less per mile as it is a lighter car with different characteristics.

I have a 2008 Avensis 1.8vvt-i with a little over 20.000 miles on the clock. The car has it`s original tyres, Dunlop SP Sport 3000 A (very good tyres in my opinion). I`ve measured last week the depth of the tyre`s groove(only on the front) and it seems that they measure 4.5 mm on each side. The minimum depth is at ~1.6 mm. Considering these, I think i can use them another 15-20.000 miles.

I think the way the tyre wear out is strongly related with the driving style and the tyre it self. In my case i think that it is very possible to use this set of tyres 35-40.000 miles.

Agree this is the main factor but there are others - what the car is driven on for example gentle driving on motorways will be kindest. Larger heavier cars, towing, heavy loads, high speeds, country lanes, around town/stop starts, poor maintenance and care (poorly tracked/poor driving habits like kerbing/not rotating/poor balancing et)c = bad.

In my experience the tyre brand/rubber composition has an impact but trade-offs occur - the Dunlop SP for example is a good tyre but I find on wet weather cornering was poor and had a 'wooden' feel.
