Rav 4 Undercar Rattle?

Hi

Ive got a rattle coming from under my 04 D4D 3dr Rav and dont seem to be able to locate it. It sounds like clanging metal on metal and from the rear passenger side of the vehicle! I only get the noise on some days normally warm ones (which isnt often in this country) and only when im travelling on bumpy or pot holed roads (and can only hear with the window down - i know what your thinking - keep the window up and keep out of the gutter - i know!!)

Ive checked the exhaust, cat and heat shields and all seems sound. Ive checked the rear suspension bits that i can see and i cannot get them to make the same sound. Shocks were mentioned in a old service report but owner says were changed and by the yellow OES lables on them i guess they were.

Ive read the rear door rattle service bulletin, but not sure if there is any easy way i can eliminate this as its quite a complicated fix?

Anyone got any ideas?

:crybaby:

See what you've started! Everyone will want a rattle now (cry baby bit).

Door locks/adjustments...? You know I just love 3 doors! Maybe the rear axle nut needing tightened to the torque??

Hows the petrolfiller pipe and breather?

Had the same thing on a MK1. The cat shield felt and looked sound but after much testing on a rough roads found it clanked. Got it spot welded. Sorted!

Try rapidly moving the rear door so its open then almost closed etc etc

If this does not produce a sound try some gentle slamming :-)

I think if you have an issue with something loose in the door this approach would find it.

Next find somewhere that does a free on ramp safety check, this might be a cheap way of locating the cause.

(I assume you have no loose tools in any of the rear pockets)
