do any of you guys every now and again swop between your 2 keys so that both of them get used ?

i must admit i havnt used the spare one since the day i bought the car, just to check it worked.

when i bought my previous car a nissan, the salesman recomended i keep swopping the keys, as this would ensure the transponder code kept working, was he right, and should i be doing this with my auris ?

if your second key has not remote, it's not necessary using it, even rarely (there isn't a central locking transmiter that have code-jumping)

Maybe... some Renaults many years back had that issue... once a key was used for some magic number of times without the other key being used, then that second key got "locked out" and became inoperational.

Be surprised if Toyota's suffered like that.

As to the Battery failing when it's not used... what possibly happens is that the regular use (and hence current being drawn from the battery) prevents the terminals oxidising. The transponder isn't powered by the Battery in the key... it's powered "inductively" from a coil around the key cylinder... the Battery only powers the remote locking transmitter.
