2009-10 Avensis Usb Port

Firstly, hello.

Like others, I'm sure, I've joined the 'club' today because I have a query...

My Avensis TR has the USB port on the front of the stereo/sat nav. I bought a 16GB flash drive, with the sole intention of playing the music that I've transferred to it. I have 76 albums/folders on it, but it only recognises 67 of them. Previously, I had 70 and it only recognised 62 of them. Also, one of the albums (folders) that it wouldn't recognise before, it now does.

Has anyone else encountered the same issue and, if so, is there a way to make it see all folders? All files are proper mp3 (not Apple AAC/m4a files, which I know won't work). I can't see any difference between those it sees and those it doesn't, so I'm really stumped.

Sorry to start with a question, but I guess I'm not the first...

Thanks/Paul

  • 1 year later...

Well, over a year has passed and I still see the same issue, despite multiple atempts to add and delete folders, etc. Latest is 83 folders on the USB drive and the car reads only 64 (which seems random)...

Is anyone else seeing this problem? Has anyone found a fix?

Thanks/Paul

I have just picked up my avensis with the TNS510 head unit, using my 16Gb USB stick, I used Windows media player to "sync" all my music to it, the result 157 folders and 1381 files in a folder called music, The sub folders are sorted by Artist, with album folders below that.

on a first look at the weekend it all appeared to be there. I will check at lunchtime if they are all there..

Thanks; it'll be good to get a reference. Also, do you know if your drive was formatted as FAT32?

I'm not sure of the model of my head unit. It's the standard unit with SatNav, as fitted in the TR (August 2010).

All of my albums are in the root folder, with artist and album name (no sub-folders at all), for example "Elvis Costello - The Man", "Pendulum - In Silico", etc. If you are able to confirm that all of your folders are there, then I will try putting all folders into a parent folder called "Music". If that fails, I'll try syncing with WMP as you did...

Hmmm.. it is only displaying the first 77 albums as it finds them on the pen.. that includes artist folders with multiple Albums..

and my pen is formatted FAT32. wonder if its a file number limit...

Found this forum Item.. it implies there is 255 file limit..

I see, from the link that you provided, that many others have seen the same problem.

Last night, when I had inserted the drive, it started playing at Lionel Richie - half way through the alphabet.

I also do not buy the theory of a 255-file limit, as proposed by the Dutch guy in the other forum as, even with only 10 tracks per album, that would give me 640 tracks and you have 77 albums showing, so...

Yesterday, I brought my drive into the office and added a word document file and then removed it. So, other than that, the drive was exactly as it had been the last time it was inserted into the head unit. This time, a completely different set of folders was visible - some overlap, of course, but no obvious pattern. There were, however, still 64 folders visible. This time, instead of starting to play a folder beginning with 'L', it started at one beginning with 'E'. I removed (correctly, via the menu) the USB drive and re-inserted it and it had not changed.

I will do some analysis later today and I may try nesting the folders into A-E, I-J, etc., to see if that works (thinking further on billhampton's post for Lexus). That will be this evening though, as I forgot to remove the drive from the car...

A little more analysis/data...

83 folders and 1253 tracks actually on the (16GB) flash drive

64 folders and 1006 tracks showing in the car (77% of folders / 80% of tracks)

No obvious pattern.

The biggest continuous block of folders appearing (without gaps) is 24 (from folder 24 to folder 47, when listed alphabetically on the PC).

Other than that, blocks are of 1, 3, 5, 6 and 11 folders.

The displayed folders contain a huge variation in the number of tracks - from 7 to 60 - so that doesn't seem to have any influence.

The folders not displayed in the car are (when listed alphabetically on PC): 6, 18, 22, 23, 48, 50, 52, 53, 59, 60, 61, 63, 64, 68, 71, 72, 73, 75

Tonight I'll create groups and drop the album folders into 5 parent folders... More tomorrow...

That was my next plan and was going to start with 5 albums in each parent folder and see where it gets me.. I will report back later..

Did 20 folders in the root with 5 albums in each folder, now only get 65 albums. down from 83. I now suspect there maybe a file name it does not like which stops the scan for music...

folder structure

Music1 - album name - files

Music2 - album name - files

etc..

OK... Created six folders "CD001", "CD002"..."CD006". I now see 76 sub-folders (albums) and, with the exception of Dusty Springfield becoming folder 1 (she should actually be the last folder in "CD001"), all other albums are now in strict alphabetical order.

So, the best result yet - the most albums so far and almost all in alphabetical order. I think there must be a near-perfect solution, although we're not there yet.

I chose the name "CD001" due to some legacy setup that used to be used on another Toyota stereo, where the USB drive kind of emulated a CD changer. I now wonder if it would help to simply put each album into its own parent folder named "CD001" through "CD083" (in my case). Possibly worth a go... In the meantime, I need to work out which albums are missing/hidden.

Update... All albums are present in "CD001" through "CD004". One is missing from "CD005" (item 6 of 9) and 6 out of 7 are missing from "CD006" (only the first album is there).

I now have 1059 tracks available, out of 1253 actually on the stick.

Later, I'm going to try putting all albums into their own parent folder, as I mentioned in my previous post.

If anyone else has any suggestions (or, better still, solutions!), please share...

is there anying unusual about the name of the missing albums or track names?

and have you tried CD000 ?

No, there's nothing different about those that 'didn't make it'. The one missing from CD005 starts with "The", but five others in that folder also do and they're displayed.

Of those missing from CD006, four start with "Various", but another in that folder also starts with "Various" and is shown. The other two missing albums, also in CD006, are just normal 'band name - track' format.

I haven't tried CD000, either. Maybe I'll rename CD006 to CD000, first, before I give each its own parent folder.

I won't get a chance to do anything more until this evening, now.

Ok had 18 folders in the root called CD000 up to CD018, below that had a maximum of 5 album names and below the album name folders renamed all the tracks to track01...trackxx..

Still only 66 albums displayed. :crybaby: Think I will look to buy a few cheaper smaller sized pens, and use media player to sync by Genre...

That's a lot of work you've done. I share your frustration...

If we knew precisely what the limitations were, we could work around them. I guess it'll just have to be trial and error (or blood, sweat and tears)...

Well, I created a parent folder (CD001 - CD083) for each album and the car sees 71 out of the 83 (worse than the previous effort, with CD001 - CD006). I'm still seeing largely the same albums, although obviously I've lost another five...

I'm starting to think that there's no logic to this and, therefore, no solution given the current hardware and software.

I'm going to rename the albums which start with "various" and delete a couple of others that I was not that fond of and see if I can get closer to 100%. Update when done...

OK, I have been successful in getting the TNS510 to see all of my music - now that I have complied with the published requirements (<999 total tracks, per the user manual), as well as the "rumoured" limit of 256 tracks per folder.

I have 995 tracks, in 56 albums, spread over 4 folders (named CD001 to CD004). I have met the requirements of fewer than 999 tracks overall and fewer than 256 tracks per folder. Now, everything I've put on the stick I can play. Everything is in alphabetical order and, when plugged in it starts at album 1, track 1... Success at last...

It seems that if you put more than the above quantity of albums/tracks on the drive, it just behaves illogically; so although it is possible to load and play more than the 999 track "limit", you lose the ability to choose which albums will appear, when you plug the device in.

It follows that there is little point in using a USB drive larger than 8GB, too...

here my cheap solution

buy one miniature USB micro sd card reader. 1.50 free postage

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/220813472541?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

and some 2Gb micros SD cards 2.00 each free postage..

The advantage of this solution is that you are unlikely to exceed limitations....

My eBay items arrived, the reader is tiny about the size of my thumbnail, and when inserted into the TNS510 it only sticks out by a few mm. The SD cards hold about 35 albums..

result..

  • 6 years later...

I've posted my query in the IQ section, but I think the TNS510 is a rare thing in the model... so hoping to resurrect this thread and see if anyone can advise!

I’m struggling with a little is the factory-installed TNS510 system.  I’ve looked at a few threads on here already, but most seem to be issues with the actual Navigation side of the system.  My issue is with the audio/mp3 side of things (I don’t use the navigation system so wouldn’t know if it works correctly or not!).  One of the reasons I jumped at the chance to buy mine was that it had this system which would allow using USB Sticks for plaing MP3s.

In my old car I used an after-market audio system (from Halfords, so not exactly top-of-the-line) and a USB Stick with all my songs organised into various files.  As long as the folder didn’t go over 250 files/songs, all was great and the system found every folder and played all the songs.

In the TNS510 system I’ve found, even using the correctly compatible USB Sticks, that only up to 5 folders are found – and even then folders can disappear at random intervals on restarting the car.  I think very briefly I managed to get the system to find seven folders, but two disappeared the next time I ran the car.

Does anyone know if this is something obvious that I’m doing wrong, or is 5 folders the maximum that can be read by TNS510?  It is also an odd thing that the system does not put the folders in any recognised list – even numbering them (ie. Folder 1, Folder 2, etc) has no impact on how they appear on the display.  It’s a bit frustrating that a (fairly cheap) Halfords-bought system worked perfectly in the Ford, but this (as I understand it – expensive) system seems to have some software weirdness.

One thing I have figured – using Robocopy means at least the songs play in the order I want them to, otherwise they are all over the place.
