2004(54) T3X 2.0 D4D Cuts Out When Cold & Diag Light > Large F

Hi everyone, hope someone can help me out, the fault shows only when cold, i get the engine management light after say 5 minutes, and only whilst the engine is cold/ish. it usually happens half way upto to normal temp. It usually shows when car is still or slow. If i switch off and restart, the car then works perfectly. So i am thinking something is reset, or unstuck by restarting ?

If i knew the engine process, what is involved in getting upto temperature i may be able to pin it down.

The car is ftsh and only 70k. Has perfect mpg and no ther faults. The code shows as large fuel leak, and or minor fuel leak.

I have had recent service but still same problem. What steps can i take to pin it down, i dont have the cash to guess and just change parts.

I personaly think it would help to know what is involved when the engine is cold, only, because i never get the fault whilst it is normal temp.

Is there a particular valve or switch or something that drops out when the engine is warm, that maybe is the cause.

maybe if relevant, and to eliminate it, i have read about an egr valve, i dont want to say its that, and get diverted, unless the evidence shows that. Is the egr only active when cold ? also can i actually see it operate from the outside ?

thankyou very much

Does the car work normally when is cold and the light on or it's on limp mode, can not accelerate? If yes, I think you have the same problem as me( see eg ''egr valve'' by palmerino). I am trying to find out as well.

You can not see it operating from outside as it is attached to the engine block but there is pictures in other topic showing where it is. Maybe you have to clean it first but what the code reading says -start from there?

Hi,

Provided there is no real large/minor fuel leak visible, the "cheapest" cause of these errors may be a faulty or untight fuel filling cap.

When the engine is running, there should be a slight vacuum inside the tank.

If the fuel cap sealing ring is leaking, the abcense of the vacuum is detected and may result in these error codes.

Just a thought.

Hi Palmerino,

no, i dont think its limp mode or the same as yours. Even if the light is on already( from before), i am still able to start and drive off perfectly, but the problem will surely show up ( cuts out) a few minutes later before the temp gets past halfway to normal. After that point, never get a problem.

When i get the problem, its usually when the temp needle has not yet got past pointing halfway upto normal, ie at about SE, (or 4.30pm ) & when the foot is off the accelerator.

When this happens i cannot move off if the car was stopped at that time, or the car will not respond to accelerator if the car was slowing. If i engage neutral it will eventually misfire and cut out. However i am able to instantly restart the car perfectly ok even when coasting along and then drive off as normal.

It seems that if reasonable speed is maintained whilst the temp needle gets past this seeming trigger point on the temp gauge, then the problem does not arise at all.

ie when the engine is cool, and the accerator is up, the problem will arise.

Hi Thermal,

Also the fuel filler cap seems fine, and this could not explain why it only affects a coldish car ?

The code says fuel leak, but far as i know , there is no fuel leak as i cannot see any leaked fuel.

I think i really need to know what fuel leak actually means, maybe it means something else, and what is it in the engine process that is involved only when cold.

Apart from the obvious, a visual inspection for leaks and replacing the fuel cap (cheap, just in case), there is little else you can do to pinpoint the problem.

Since modern fuel injection systems are rather complicated, and potentially dangerous to work on, I recommend to go to a Toyota dealer and have them diagnose it.

They have special equipment to locate the cause of such error codes.

  • 5 years later...

i thought i had updated this but anyway, good news, back in 2011,  i put wyns fuel system cleaner fluid into the tank, and also changed fuel supplier from asda to Shell, after a few months the problem disappeared and everything has been absolutely fine for 4 years, then last year i sold the car as i fancied a mazda

lesson, dont use cheap asda fuel
