Strange Knocking From The Rear

Recommended Posts

My wife came home the other day and said she heard a knocking from the rear as if the jack was kncoking/rolling across the boot floor. She mentioned it again tonight saying it made the same noise as she reversed over a speed bump, she looked under the boot carpet and the tool set was securely fitted into it polystyrene holder thingy.

I took the car out for a spin, driving over various surfaces, at various speeds and very levels of agression chucking it about. It made no noise at all until I gently oturned left into a street and I heard what sounded like something rolling across the boot floor. The boot is empty. When I got home I reversed the car onto the drive and as the back wheel went up the sloping curb it made the same noise.

Have pushed down on the rear of the car, shook it left and right, tried to rattle the exhaust/hangers and cant seem to make it produce the same noise. It's totally doing my head in not being able to figure it out. Anyone got any ideas?

Well this proved to be a popular post :P

Been back out in the car with my wife and heard the knocking again, inspected the underside of the car and found it to be the exhaust banging against the car body. It's just in front of the back wheel (drivers side) where the pipe seems to turn upwards and there is a join from the main exhaust pipe to the back box pipe.

Has anyone else experienced this issue? There doesnt seem to be a hanger here and I'm wondering if there is one missing?

Thanks for any advice ;)

AFAIK the entire exhaust is only supported in 4 places:

-The exhaust manifold

-A single hanger just behind the font axle crossmember

-2 Hangers on either side of the backbox.

a family member of mine had exactly the same prob with their aygo after the prevoius one was replaced it rattles constantly but other than that does not seem to have caused any other prob if it was me i wd take it to a garage and maybe ask if they could run their eyes over it

Thanks for the replies.

The only problem is we didnt buy it from a Toyota garage, so I fell they might not have much knowledge of the Aygo. If it's just the design of it and it wont cause any problems I'm quite happy to leave it.

I had a knocking from the back of my Aygo not long after I got it, turned out the spare wheel had worked a little loose, worth a quick check?

I had a really weird squeaking and rattling from the back of my Aygo and it turned out the rear seats hadn't been put back up properly from when they'd last been folded down, so they were rattling against the metal hooks. It took hours before we realised what it was :)
