2006 Avensis Hatch 1.8 Vvti Water Pump.

Hi, my 2006 56 plate Avensis Hatch 1.8 petrol is in for service and they have noticed a small loss of coolant due to apparently a small leak from the water pump.

They have quoted me nearly £300 to get the pump replaced.

i've never had cause to replace a water pump before. I can't seem to find genuine Toyota water pumps for sale online so haven't a clue how much they should be or how much to fit. Naturally I would rather not pay £300. there are non Toyota parts available which apparently fit.

Has anyone got any advice on either where to get a Toyota water pump at a decent price, how much should they cost anyway and would a non Toyota part make any difference if fitted?

many thanks in advance.

Parts king above has given me a decent price for a water pump - now just need to find out how much fitting will cost.......

First things first, how much coolant is it losing?

All water pumps weep fractionally (all manufacturers not just Toyota). They need coolant passing into the seal to help lubricate it whilst turning. The pump has drain holes in it to protect the weeping affecting the bearings and a cavity in it to try and prevent you/the dealer noticing it. The coolant colour is bright pink meaning that if it does get to the outside of the catch pocket cavity it tends to get noticed quickly.

If the dealer has noticed a "leak" due to seeing that on the outside of the pump then I wouldn't bother changing the pump straight away. If they've noticed the water level dropping then maybe somthing needs doing. If I were you I'd just keep an eye on the water level for the moment.

Changing the pump is fairly easy to do and probably only 30 minutes work requiring only a new pump, a 19mm spanner (I think it is), a 10mm spanner and probably some replacement coolant.

Firstly sketch/photograph the layout of the belt on the front of the engine (makes putting things back together later easier.

Take the 19mm spanner and there's a cast nut on the side of the belt tensioner. Put the spanner on it and pull firmly to take tension off the belt

This will allow you to remove the belt (helps if someone can help out since I always thought I needed three hands when I did it myself)

Next there are 5 x 10mm bolts in the pump (2 different lengths of bolt) remove them (making a note of which holes the longer/shorter bolts come out of)

Pump will then come off and some coolant will come out of the engine. Ideally catch it to refill with later or get some new to replace with.

Refit new pump (there's an o-ring seal around it) ideally get a new one and be careful not to pinch it during refitting

Refit the belt

Refill lost coolant and bleed off any air in the system (squeeze the hoses to push air around the system)
