Hi and welcome to TOC! There is a section at the top of the forum topics which details the problem and possible solutions. Worth a read even though it will be a long one!

Unfortunately it is not only common but almost a certainty at some stage, some at much lower mls than yours, however once done this is virtually the only known fault although replacing SCV (suction control valves) is becoming a regular topic.. You don't HAVE to pay the £1600 Mr T will quote you, some have managed to get it done for half that, eg Japarts have a kit for £368 inc vat..However it is quite a difficult + labour intensive job Anchorman has done one recently + I don't think he would relish doing another..Still i think we all agree the 4.2 is a great motor  Stew

Hi, mine is the same year and now 57k miles, but has been getting progressively worse since 52k miles, symptoms are increasing vibration under load at certain speeds.

Write a letter to Toyota HQ, go straight to the top brass, don’ ***** around and you will get contacted by their PR dept, they will give you a Ref. No.. I was told to get my fault verified at a Toyota Garage…, that will be between £40 – £60 which they should offer to knock of the final bill. Then they will tell you how much percentage if any they are prepared to knock off the bill - obviously doing it a Toyota Garage! which in turn makes it twice as expensive as a local garage.

Toyota Garage: £1400 - £1600, minus 50% discount = £700 - £800

Local Garage: £750 - £900.

Money – Choice – Pays or something like that.

Or D.I.Y. the replacement kit for a 'solid' replacement flywheel kit costs £430!

Hi,

I have a RAV 4 d4d and broken down yesterday. The AA recovery man told me the problem is DMF clutch and this morning the local garage has also told me the problem must be MDF. he says it cost around £1500.oo pomds. Could you please advice me what should I do for this problem? did you get any discount from the Toyota HQ at all?

You need to read the pinned section at the top of this RAV4 section, it gives you all the details you will need to know reference the DMF issues.
