Worried About Life Of Clutch

Recommended Posts

The acceleretion/torque pull is much more huge now and Ive been told stock clutch limit is 300lb/ft so im 19lb/ft below to be safe. But how long till it conks out? Done 44k and 0 clutch dumps since chipping it....just rolling starts.

Words spread and now everyone wants a ride in it since the power hike...I cant staaaaands no more! And I think I might budget for replacement brakes :(

The stock clutch is good for 80k..under stock load that is! I think you'll need an uprated sports clutch within another 10-15k if you treat it right, I think Bibbs has one too

p.s. whats the fuel economy like now? does the needle seem to drop to empty whenyoure under full boost ? i've heard the unichip makes the car more economic as well as more powerful but i'd be interested to know what the economy of a 301bhp beast is!

I needed a new clutch when I got to 220 lb/ft .. but it was probably 45,000 miles old and loads of Japanese abuse (mine used to be a gymkana car).

I have a feeling that my clutch may be going... after a good drive, when I get out and walk past the car I can smell a ****ty eggy smell.... That's exactly what i DON'T need....

Signature check !

I havent driven sanely since ive got the chip. Its near empty right now and its got 181 miles which is clearly more than I would have got before! Bear in mind this is with major high speed antics on mway and many 'demonstrations' to my m8s.

So its clear the economy is better...if I was putting the car under the same stress before the chip was fitted my tank woulda been empty at 165 odd (170max) and trust me ive done it many many times before to check the economy.

I will try to drive normally but I cant help driving it fast to feel all the changes thru rev range and gears. I call it 'research'. :)

I'm looking into a new clutch also.

I'm hitting about 275ft lb torque.

Will be more once WI and Uprated actuator is in. Maybe I can beat your 301 BHP Pizzaboy !!

Jimlad, wouldn't it be better to fit a new clutch if and when the old one goes?? Obviously if you're getting a lot of slip etc. after your mods, then you should change it then and there, but to do so otherwise would be a big waste of money?????

Posted

or to change it in preperation of future mods ??

Posted

I think it might be better to change it as and when needed, and only once your existing one slips. Just makes sense to me.

u should know me by now... lol

I guess so :). I suppose I'm just one of life's savers, with far too many contingency plans etc. You on the other hand live on the edge. Maybe it's more fun that way......

I got my clutch fitted recently. Symtoms before it NEEDED replacing were mainly a bad smell when i got out the car after drving about. However inbetween gears, especially under high acceleration... the clutch wouldnt grip the next gear straight away... maybe 0.5sec delay before hard acceleration again.

To be honest it should last a few thousand miles if it isnt slipping once its in gear. My trip to crail kinda shortened its life span

Looks like I have to sell my beloved mountain bike for the clutch change....

By the way, anyone want to buy a Kona Stinky?

Hi, Salami, where did you get your clutch fitted because I need one ASAP, and I'm in your area. Did you get good service from them? I'm looking for a garage in the Glasgow area to regular work on my 2.

thanks.

aha msherry! You shoulda been out last night it was absolutely mental! There is usually a huge meet in Motherwell and they all decided to come into Glasgow this time which is very rare. Was scooby central (zzzzzz) but fun never the less. The best race I had was an nice RB5 which I pulled up to and asked the fat dude inside what hes done to the car...his technical reply was "hunnerds 'o' shtuff m8". ...errr ok! He got the shock of his life hehe! Another great run was againt a white Impreza Type R (on R plate..is that version 6?)was a great win it sounded awsome tho(standard car only mod was decat+Blitz NUR, the owner didnt seem impressed with his car..hmm!). A very nice mint red Escort RS Turbo whose occupants claimed it was 'unfair' cos its a 'showcar' hehe and an S13 Turbo with fat pipe who I gave a car length head start to, reeled him back in and tossed him over my shoulder  .

The maddest thing I witnessed was some 1960sumthin camaro V8+supercharger whomping on a mica blue WRX. It sounded incredible..V8 mixed with s'charger whine. Was best night for looong time.

MSherry the garage I use is Toyota Helensburgh 20 miles outta Glasgow, the garages in Glasgow are all crooks imo and ive been to em all and thats including ALL GLASGOW TOYOTA DEALERS. They lie outta thier teeth and charge £65 per hour. H'burgh only charge £40 and do a brill job everytime..very honest people. Its worth the travel m8 get the job done proper. I only use Shields Toyota in southside to order parts.

Hey we should meet up I dont know any rev3+ owners! I cannot pm you it states

Damn that sounds like fun...reminds me of the old days before the law change, now even if your wheels spin at take off or mr plod decideds you have just displayed "excessive acceleration" (which doesn't even need to have wheels spinning) you can have your car confisicated and sold withen 28 days to recover the $1000 instant fine you get too :(

I'll put another spin on the clutch thing.....when I had my Gen II I finaly burnt my stock clutch out racing a GTX Familia and got a heavy duty one put in. NEVER again, it was GREAT for hard driving and launching BUT REALLY horrible in normal everyday driving. If and when my stocker goes Im gonna go stock again.

Cheers

Yea same ere Im just gonna buy another stock un too. Its worrying with uprated clutches as they will take high rpm hammerings and launches all day but normal driving (slipping) will wear em out double time. Can any guru shed light on this? Also I read in an post a while back that you can fit GT4 clutches but need to retain a part specific to the tubby. Any1 remind me of the price and the part to retain?
