2001 1.8 Vvti Timing Chain

hi, my 2001 avensis 1.8 vvti has developed a metallic type rattle from the engine. When i rev the car it goes quiter but when idle it gets louder again. Its alot louder when its cold and does go quiter when it warms up but never completley disapears. My car has started to struggle to get up hills and it usually means i have to drop into a lower gear to help it. It also has developed a slight misfire.

I have visited my local mechanic and he has listened to the car and has told me that it is the timing chain becoming slack. He has advised me to not replace the chain as it would cost £120 for chain and £400 in labour. Is it possible he may be wrong? and is it really this expensive to replace a belt? i have been told by another mechanic that these chains last the lifetime of the car usually.

Other than the noise from the chain the car sounds sweet when i rev it.

Please someone help me. :unsure::help:

I would get a third opinion and a quote from another mechanic. Remember, unlike a cam belt the chain is enclosed in the engine. The cost will be higher than most cam belt changes (except diesels which are really expensive).

This 'chains should last the life time of the engine' only true if the engine has regular oil changes. I know that chains do 'stretch' or the guides are worn, causing the noise. The noise could also be a warning to a major failure - chain snapping! Very expensive.

I have the earlier leanburn engine which is has a belt, but know personally of friends of different make of car that have had to have the chain and guides changed.

Somebody with experience of your engine will give a better advise than me.

Good luck.
