Hard On Petrol

i have a 2000 1.6 petrol id say im only getting about 20mpg, it is driven carefully with no obvious faults.this is the smallest engined car i have owned for eg.2.0 rover 75, 2.0 alfa 156,but by far the hardest on petrol any help?....

Hi mate, I would say that you should be getting around 30mpg on local runs and 40mpg plus on long runs. My brother who lives over your part of the world has had 2 cars like yours and that's what he has always says, in fact he can get nearer 50mpg driving steady on long trips. The first thing to check is the air filter, change it anyway and let us know how you get on.
